Sitting in a resturant in Cornwall , not that busy , and 3 Britanies walk in , sit down and discuss the menu , a staff member arrives to take the order , at this point I nearly choke on my beer ,one girl pipes up " can I have whitebait please , Is that chicken ? "

If you dont know you dont know.
I had never heard of whitebait until a few years ago.
Its generally not on the menu in non seaside areas.
Im fed up of explaining what haggis is to ignorant sassenach.
You’ve kind of contradicted yourself with those two statements.I had never heard of whitebait until a few years ago.

I don’t think I knew what whitebait was until I was 16 years old. It is amazing how the odd food can evade you for most of your life, and always a nice surprise when you discover a new one.

Some things pass people by for any number of reasons (don't eat out much, very conservative parental food tastes, etc)Sitting in a resturant in Cornwall , not that busy , and 3 Britanies walk in , sit down and discuss the menu , a staff member arrives to take the order , at this point I nearly choke on my beer ,one girl pipes up " can I have whitebait please , Is that chicken ? I can think of any number of things I didn't know more about until I left home. Not whitebait as the local chippy had them.
White pudding, lamb ham, sweetbreads, Scotch woodcock, Bombay duck, head cheese, etc
Many many years ago my Wife and I (although at the time she was my Girlfriend) were eating in Cafe Rouge in Highgate. This was so long ago that Cafe Rouge was borderline acceptable. Anyway, we overheard a young lady on the next table enquiring quite loudly about the absence of beef from what she had ordered. After much ear-wigging and perusing of the menu, my Wife and I concluded that she had ordered the "Beef Tomato" salad.
