Happy new year chilli growers!

I appear (so far) to have successfully over wintered 4 out of 5 of my ‘hot’ plants judging by the mild explosion of new growth…. Unfortunately the Aphid population have also made an early start this year so war has commenced!

Have seeds for sowing too which I’ll start early Feb, also bought a poly stylee lean to house so the chillies won’t have to share with the toms cucumbers and gherkins this year…

Any else over wintered?

Nah, I recently got rid of all mine. I should perhaps have cut one of them back and kept it inside but this year I'm not sure I'm going to grow... one responsibility too many! I'll see how I feel though... I've still got over a bottle of fermented hot sauce from last year's batch... a load of dried chillies and a stash in the freezer so I'm not running low!

Look forward to seeing how yours develop!

I didn't even try, but I've got some seeds and will start again when it gets a bit warmer.

Not overwintered but bought one of those indoor hydroponic setups

all I can say is WOW - Ive got buds on my plants already and only been using it since middle of December

Also started Roma tomato off and its now huge and budding

These have all been potted on and a new batch is brewing

Had an OKish crop last year, so look forward to starting them off again in just over a month's time.

Did notice last year that the seeds took a very long time to germinate and were generally quite 'weedy' looking until they bushed out in the late Summer. confused

I made jars of candid chillies with last years crop, tastes lovely as the syrup is sweet and the chopped chillies are hot. Lovely to put on pizzas, or nachos etc whilst drizzling the syrup over too.

I've previously bought Haynes candid chillies which are amazing, but decided to make my own and they turned out well..

Idoo 12 pod system from amazon, cost around 90 Quid if I recall

I think they all do pretty much the same thing, germinate and grow really quickly

Hello fellow hot heads. Crazy to think not long until we need to start some new plants going. I’ve been growing chillies indoors since the first lockdown and having quite a bit of success. I’m quite lucky that I have a bay window that gets the sun from the moment it rises until the moment it sets. It gets very hot though which stresses the plants, but that just seems to make them chuck out even more chillies, probably because they contantly think they’re about to die lol

Heading to the South Devon Chilli farm soon, hopefully get some seeds.

Any recs for something a newbie can grow at home?

Both sets of seeds arrived this morning, so a potential 30 plants. smile

Giving some serious thought to taking a punt on one of those hydroponics kits, they're coming up at 89 quid on my Amazon page. scratchchin

Cayenne are one of the most forgiving (ime)…. And not stupidly hot, a good ‘culinary’ chilli and quite prolific… when I first started my chilli adventure some years ago I bought my seeds from the guys at South Devon… Dorset Nagas and they were awesome… you probably know, the guys at South Devon Chilli are good mates with Hugh FW…. Good luck and enjoy smile

Edited to add, also Jalapeño and Hungarian Hot Wax (which aren’t particularly hot) and if you want hot but not super hot have a go with Scotch Bonnets..

I'm growing PCR, Feherozon and Boneta this year. But they're all peppers rather than chillies
