Nice red wine for special occasions…

Thanks for posting that. Hadn’t realised that the Vauthier family had bought La Clotte (they own Ausone). Might pick up a few of those.
It’s quite hard (impossible?) to pick a bad classed growth Bordeaux in 2016. Have started opening a few of them, only Canon so far from StE, and am pleased to have more tucked away.

I’m saving the 2016 Ausone for a bigger occasion! It’s quite hard (impossible?) to pick a bad classed growth Bordeaux in 2016. Have started opening a few of them, only Canon so far from StE, and am pleased to have more tucked away.

...I'm so pleased to have kept the 6 bottles of 2016 Pomerol 'stolen' from Aldi last Christmas, only wish I had been quicker before they all wentIt’s quite hard (impossible?) to pick a bad classed growth Bordeaux in 2016. You often find that a few years after a change of ownership and/or significant investment the quality improves noticeably before the prices get increased, especially if the team running them really knows what they're doing.
Two that I've got my eye on are Troplong Mondot (another St Emilion, with a winemaker with quite a track record at the helm) and, away from Bordeaux, Nervi (recently bought by Roberto Conterno, but he was involved for a few years prior).

The Ogier “La Rosine” they feature (£24 —> £19.20) is one I buy in most vintages. Punches beyond what you’d expect for a Vin de Pays. By coincidence, I have some bottles from the ‘19 and a ‘20 vintages arriving this week from a different supplier, where they’ve been sat since purchase en primeur. Had a quick look at the order: they were £144/dozen en primeur, so will end up a few quid cheaper than Berry’s sale price. I don’t think that’s a bad saving for buying a couple of years in advance.

Had the pleasure of sharing this with some friends last night:
Very, very nice indeed, although it obviously should be, for the money!
That takes me back... used to be able to get Grange in local Oddbins along with other Penfolds wines. IIRC, last ones I bought I paid £25/bottle (albeit 20 years ago) for the '97 Bin 707. Still have a few kicking around, might revisit as it's a couple of years since I last opened one. Very, very nice indeed, although it obviously should be, for the money!
It's astonishing how much Penfolds managed to increase pricing, up there with the very top end of Syrah, but must be a nice business for them at the current price levels.
