Train stations, motorway service stations, and airports all tend to be franchised outlets hence the difference.
Off topic, but I've worked in hospitality, and my wife runs a restaurant company, and both of us can never understand why Starbucks don't put more effort into their food offer, which is woeful. I appreciate their ethos is " it's all about the coffee", but even simple things like their croissants are poor. It isn't that difficult to put an oven in and bake them, rather than take them out of their cellophane wrappers and bung them on a plate..

Some of their savoury stuff is pretty decent, butI've always found that their cakes are always visually appealing but massively disappointing when you start eating them.Edited by tim0409 on Sunday 17th December 16:30
Still, I suppose they go with the burnt-tasting brown dishwater they serve under the guise of "coffee"!

I always get their blonde roast, its acceptable.
Non of the high street chains are great though.
Nero > Costa > Starbucks?
Yes Nero is definitely the best of the bunch, at least they know how to make a decent espresso and I like the fact that you get free water, as you do in Italy. The rest though are an insult to coffee.Non of the high street chains are great though.
Nero > Costa > Starbucks?
I've been in two of these chains recently, the first was a regional Starbucks, the "speciality" festive drink was £5.60, in there a family had the full lunch sandwiches etc..then again I was I sat in a costa opposite monument for a coffee and a family in there had effectively the full lunch so sandwiches, drinks, crisps.
1. Both places were filthy, most Starbucks are as well and this is not just a costa thing, the floor full of spilt drink, tables never cleaned
2. They had all left most of the food on the table and never touched it!
Having said that I went in Pret when in London and spent 30 quid on a sandwich, drink, crisps for three of us, is this the culprit chain really driving up prices in London?
