Whatever happened to the meal deal?
Discussion
Heading out for the day, thought I'd pop into Asda for a meal deal, you know, a sarnie, some crisps and a drink.
Put the items through the self-service checkout: it comes up £6.50. What's going on I thought, has it not recognised the deal?
Went back and checked and yes, there was a graphic, three items all for £3.50. Anyway, thought maybe I'd picked up too big a packet of crisps so put them back and checked out the sarnie and the drink: it comes up £6.
Asked one of the assistants; apparently the three items for £3.50 graphic is only an illustration of what you might pay. In fact it's now buy three items and get the cheapest free, And all the items on the shelf have different prices so it's only going to be a deal if you go poverty spec.
Ended up buying a sandwich alone for £3.50.
RIP the meal deal.

It is still available elsewhere, although nearer £4 & £4.50 than the £3 of old.
Seen a sarnie in Aldi for £2.65 IIRC yesterday, and cheese and onion £1 not long ago for £1.70 which seems a pretty outrageous change in % terms. Now they have captured a slice of the market, they seem to be upping the prices.

The local bakers chain does a meal deal, sub roll, 500ml bottle and either a bag of crisps or a sausage roll £4 the lot
A sub roll by itself is £3.50 and a 500ml bottle £1.70, not sure about the crisps or sausage roll though.
And if you have a loyalty card you'll get a stamp which adds up to various offers culminating in a free meal deal on stamp number 20.

Asda pricing is very haphazard .
I posted in the annoyed beyond reason thread this week because I picked up something supposed to be reduced to £3.25 ,I think , but when scanned was full price £4.60 .
I left it behind and went back today to buy same thing in a different size at a better price .

Fine line between me shopping there for cheapness and still having to go to Morrisons for branded goods to just going to Morrisons for everything.

Tesco meal deal still exists.
Sarnie, snack and drink for £3.50 if you have a clubcard.
Around these parts in Tesco it's £3.40 with Clubcard, £3.90 without and Sainsbury's is £3.50 or £5 for the posh sandwiches option.Sarnie, snack and drink for £3.50 if you have a clubcard.

I always keep some drinks and crisps in the boot, then you only need to buy one thing
I’m a tight mofo
But you would have had to buy that drink and crisps at some point previously. If you're buying a £3 sandwich on a £3.50 meal deal, then getting the crisps and the drink for another 50p seems to be the tight thing to do. Even if they get added to the stuff in the boot. I’m a tight mofo
Asda till system can't cope with a traditional meal deal mechanic so they offer 3 for 2.
Sounds bullst but 100% true.
They are miles behind Tesco with the meal deal offering but margins are exceptionally low and manufacturers only take part to drive trial, volume and distribution for new and existing lines.
