What’s your ‘best’ sandwich?
For me, I have very fond memories of Pan Bagnat in Nice, and Jamon Beurre in Paris.
Give me some suggestions? I’d love to replicate a Pan Bagnat here, but a) wife hates tuna and b) looks like it would cost a fortune to make if not doing so in bulk.

I remember watching a series on one of the obscure Freeview channels called "America's Best Sandwich", and some of the stuff on there really put my local sandwich shop into perspective. (A quick search search suggests this might have been "Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America")
It wasn't bad when I worked in an office - we had one shop that did interesting combinations such as Pate and Bacon, Ham and Smoked Cheese, Prawn Egg and Mayonnaise, which was good in comparison to the earlier one where, if you went early enough, you might be able to get cheese and tomato on the same sandwich (this was the early nineties, so stuff was fairly plain then around here). Another one opened and their most memorable for me was the "Brunch Bap", which was Bacon, Sausage, Cheese and maybe an egg, I forget now. I know the latter closed down, and the other one changed hands. We sort-of lost interest because a travelling food van started to call at our place, so there was no point trekking into town to get something. Their "best" for me was a Ploughmans on French stick, a real tooth work-out.

If you ever find yourself near Bedford, drop in to the Wickes car park next to Waitrose and try the Chicken Saltimbocca from Ciao Down.

Insanely tasty.

As a teenage school kid I would have recommended a stottie cake packed with pickled onion flavoured Space Raiders, not sure if I would still fancy it now some 30 years later.
A salt beef sandwich from Beigel Bake in Brick Lane, London takes some beating for me.

We had a US Themed sandwich shop in Chatham (i agree that sounds made up for Chatham) back in the 90’s that used to mimic the quality of higher end London establishments, by using quality ingredients. You chose a sandwich from a menu, based on its name, not the filling.
One of their creations was called the Porkies II, which included crispy bacon, sausage, mayo, and a home recipe tomatoe pickle. I usually had it with cheese on crusty granary bread.
It’s been the top sandwich shop sandwich I have eaten for the last 30 years.
It was a shame to hear they closed after 25 years.
At home, every Xmas we treat ourselves to a Jamie Oliver recipe toasted cheese sandwich, as it puts you into a cheese coma.

From what I remember of my childhood, rocking around the coast of southern France in the 1960's, I am pretty sure that Pain Bagnat is pretty much salade Nicoise in a big roll, non? I loved them as a kid and can definitely see myself making one now! What’s your ‘best’ sandwich?

2 bits of toasted Hovis, a large bit of thick Cumberland sausage (from a real butchers in Cumberland) - do the sos in air fryer unitl skin caramelised, split the sos and stick it in the toast, lots of black pepper, some Stokes Ketchup and a large free range fried (or two) egg mashed onto the top. Lid on and enjoy

The Rueben at Katz Deli will forever hole a special place in my heart.
Glad you enjoyed it. I went there with such high hopes and unfortunately came away hugely disappointed by the whole experience. Meat was greasy AF and whilst tender, the main taste I seem to recall was the dressing that overpowered everything else. Staff were also very rude - I remember one customer taking a photo of the staff serving and the huge dude behind the counter kicked off and demanded he deleted it immediately! Not somewhere I'll be rushing back.
