I don't smoke - I used to... loved it actually. smile

Yesterday I nipped into a BP garage to buy 20 Marlboro for a friend - I paid £18.70 and thought 'smoking has become even more expensive'.

20 smokes is expensive - but not nearly £19..... I'd like to say I'm fuming.

Is this normal? Do garages routinely mark up this much?

Try buying engine oil from them, quite often double the price compared to what you can get with a 2 minute google.

Apparently their cans of coke are more expensive than Tesco as well - outrageous.

Advise your friend to stop smoking.

Do not buy them cigarettes.

biggrin

It was a genuine question from me - I'd assumed that some items, like Marlboro cigarettes, were the same price wherever you bought them. Pretty sure that was the case when I smoked. A 30% markup seems a lot.

Shocking, isn't it every time when buying fags for friends. 40 Marlboro Reds wrapped in pretty paper and stick - on bow would make a suitably expensive Christmas present. Maybe glue a picture of a cowboy riding a splendid horse with Monument Valley in the background instead of a diseased, blackened lung. Highest I've paid is twenty quid for twenty in Newcastle city centre after hours a couple of years ago when my friend was desperate.

I've never smoked and never given any thought to how much they cost. But Jesus 19 quid a packet.

20 a day is a 600 quid a month habit. That's nearly the same as my mortgage.

How do people afford that?

They don't - I don't smoke but they're more generally around 10 quid a packet. Still outrageous but makes the numbers at least a bit more sensible.

That's why I used to roll my own when I smoked years ago. Plus I preferred the taste. Never put filters in as it was a faff. Still a waste of money and stupid but hey. I now vape but not the 'kin stupid bubblegum, strawberry, vanilla flavour st. I actually vape tobacco flavour, and not the huge great clouds like you see enveloping some tts! smokin

That ship sailed years ago. Even cleaning ladies fags are 4 or 5 quid more than that.

malrlboro reds are £15 a packet but always £18-19 at BP for some reason!

if you smoke them then it's worth going for a cheap weekend away somewhere on ryanair and bringing back several thousand from duty free. (obviously at your own risk but it's very common that people are doing this now due to the prices and very very rare to get stopped at the airport)

I bought some Lambert & Butler silvers for a friend last night for ~12 quid a packet. From the local Co-op here in Aberdeenshire so assuming that's the going rate

I gave up when a packet of tabs was £2.20. I thought that was extortionate.

I reckon I've saved myself some £40k by not smoking since then.

You don't remember cigarettes machines in pubs where you paid more than a regular pack of 20 but you only got 16.

You’re obviously still self conscious about your vaping. Why don’t you give up?
