Day out in Southwold so pop into a high street cafe for sandwiches and tea.
Bog standard egg and cress sandwich weighed in at £7.50 round.
pot of tea for a £5
Slice of cake £3.50
So £30 or a light lunch for two. That seems expensive to me for what is being served, maybe I’m a tight git. Had a look at other local cafes in the area and lt seemed to be around same price.

It all depends on the quality.Bog standard egg and cress sandwich weighed in at £7.50 round.

I’ve paid similar and been very happy. I’ve also paid less than half that recently and felt completely ripped off.
I would much prefer to pay a little more for quality ingredients, made well and served with a smile.
These photos were taken in an independent coffee shop chain in the North of England back in January and back then the prices for the food items were steep enough, albeit made locally and not mass produced in a factory. Starbucks nearby and prices no better, but for some it seems less controversial because it's a chain.
Edit: the Danish pastries I admit didn't look the most home-made and they did leave me stumped at £3.20 each.
I didn't take snaps of the sandwiches but upwards of £3.50 was the starting point for something small and basic.
As some have said, it's a trade-off between price, quality, supporting the local economy and 'experience', which people no doubt may want and expect with an independent eatery that wants to charge more.

When in Southwold its inevitably an Adnams establishment I visit and the Swan Hotel is a particular favourite . I cant believe you were mucking about with Pots of Tea with all that Beer in close proximity I do agree though , some prices can be extortionate
It’s a beautiful town which we visit as often as possible, unfortunately it is me that has the driving duties, so no beer or any other alcohol until I get home to local pubs.Ham_and_Jam said:

Well, well, well, if it isn't the consequences of your actions. An evangelist like you will never join the dots but can't say it's not fun watching the endless denials.
Well yes there is something to be said for using cheap EU labour, but as a matter of conscious it becomes a question of morals, labour exploitation or choice of an expensive egg sandwich. I made my choice back in 2016 and never regret it for a moment. Egg sandwich, jeeez it is expensive but that’s the price, and I chose not to buy that sandwich and purchased an alternative meal elsewhere which offered better value for me. And that’s the choice isn’t it and the reality of business, competition is king and so is the customer. Your Welcome . Vasco said:
It's Southwold.
Cheaper towns (and sandwiches) are available elsewhere.
Sadly, exactly this. We once went for a Coop sandwich in Southwold for a similar reason: get a takeaway coffee and sit on the beach!Cheaper towns (and sandwiches) are available elsewhere.
Two Magpies Bakery was a nice stop last year, but again, pricy.
Still….off to Latitude in a couple of days, ready to get ripped off again
