Booked a table online yesterday evening for a pub/restaurant in Bath and when reading the email confirmation the above was included in it!

Not seen that before when booking anywhere, I guess it is to stop people eating then just keeping the table for the evening for drinks perhaps?

Guessing they can't just ask us to vacate the table if we have not finished eating, I imagine someone somewhere has arried out a time/motion study and determined 90mins is adequate

I hate that. I would have cancelled and found somewhere else.

No they wouldn’t but who really takes longer than 90 minutes to eat a 3 course meal.

If it’s somewhere decent the likelihood is you can retire to the bar or have a drink before if that is your prerogative.

It has been quite common since Covid to have time restrictions on tables.

If it's a really busy place they will probably need their table back. You might get a table elsewhere or at the bar. If it's not busy they won't bother.

Pubs and fast food places easily get through a few courses in 1.5 hours.

I think it's probably far far more common than you think, and I'm not sure why it surprises or offends people.

I’ve got no issues with it - providing the service is up to snuff. If the service is slow, then I may take over the 90
And that’s on them

They are a few places that we go to and you only get the table for 2 hours as well. As said it does seem to be a bit of a post Covid thing.

Table turning isn't a post COVID thing.

It became normal during Covid and has stayed in place since.

Restaurants have always done it, but pubs are doing it more now.

I remember before Covid I could walk into any of my local pubs/restaurants and just get a table, whereas now I have to phone up or book online to get a table in comparison(If I just walk in now I get turned away). I wonder if I've only just noticed the table time restrictions more now because places are so much more busy in comparison to pre Covid.

Better that they're up front with it if that's their game.

Whether it would bother me would depend. Last time we were in Bath I think Sotto Sotto gave us 2 hours which feels like a bit less of a squeeze but we were planning on moving on for drinks elsewhere anyway. And there was a line about giving the table away if we were more than 15 minutes late.

From a customer perspective it can feel like an imposed limit (which it is) but it’s essential for most restaurants to be profitable. My old restaurant manager hated turning tables but as I explained. First table pays the rent. Second one pays his wages. After that I might make a profit.

This has been around since food was invented. There has always been a couple of sittings an evening it seems people need it spelling out to them now.

If you book at 6pm expect to be moved on for the 7.30/8pm booking.
Lesson is if you want the nice restaurant table for the rest of the night book for 7.30pm or later.
Most kitchens dont take new tables past 9pm. If you book at 7.30pm you get until closing time generally speaking.

Depends on the restaurant and if there are people behind you. I’ve been moved on and also allowed to sit as long as I wanted. One place, we hadn’t finished eating and we were over time because we were chatting. We were rushed firmly but politely about 1h 15min in. My date got furious with them and then started having a go at me for booking the place.

Another place, we were told we had 2 hours but stayed for 3 and a half, they didn’t say anything. I presume because the people behind us cancelled. We also went to town ordering stuff at the end of the meal, about 20 of us kept the drinks flowing so I don’t think they minded.

Or the waiters rejigged their entire seating plan when you didnt move and squeezed everyone else in whilst you were having a grand old time.
The amont of times what you set out on the table plan is not what you exactly seat is unreal.

I'd also suggest that they won't chuck people out unless they are taking the piss and hogging a table for hours on end. As you say when we go for a meal we try and minimize the time on the table and just retire to the bar when finished. fking rude otherwise.

I don’t mind it as long as the service is quick enough that I can eat my meal in the allocated time, if they are slow they can fk off until I’m finished.

It's been a thing since restaurants were invented.

What is recent and gets on my thrupennies is how many restaurants now close on Mondays and Tuesday, and close early on the days they are open. I went to West Bridgford near Nottingham last week on a Thursday after the cricket, a nice warm evening. Of all the restaurants open, only one would serve us at 9.30pm. All the others closed their kitchens at 9pm. Society is disintegrating I tell you.

Whenever someone's said that to me I've said TBNT.

I'm not a 3 hour lingerer but feeling like I need to be on time to the min, order (after all I imagine they are there quick step) then wrist check throughout?

No.
