Any recommendations for a decent steak and or fish restaurant for a mid week meal whilst working down there. I'm thinking Notting Hill, Kensington, possibly Chelsea areas.

Any recommendations appreciated !

Steak Kensington

Fish Mayfair

Shouldn't go far wrong with either.

Or go to Beast near Bond St and have both - steak and king crab legs.

For cooked fish I also rate Barrafina, closest would be soho or Covent Garden

Sophie's in Chelsea is a great steak place. Relaxed atmosphere and always decent food.
Alternatively you could visit The Big Easy on the Kings Road as they have fantastic steak and sea-food. Usually live music during the week (although don't go to the Covent Garden one, it feels more like a tourist-trap as the food was no where near as good as their original location).

I was literally talking about this today having tried another of my favourite restaurant's new venue in Covent Garden. I think it's a symptom of trying to get the higher footfall in and out as quickly as possible.

Another vote here for The Big Easy on the Kings Road, it's more casual than the other places mentioned but the food is really good, I'm not a fish fan but my GF always gets the lobster and never has any complaints. They also do specials every day that change so have a look online at what they have on.

If you are looking in actual West London then Grill on the Green in Kew is fantastic. Also Buenos Aries (chain but a very good one in Chiswick and Richmond).

Excellent glad to see another fan.
Big Easy do great 'surf and turf' plates, too. Steak with lobster or massive shell on prawns. Gorgeous.
Plus they do a great mojito, also.,

OP, would you mind actually letting us know where you eat? We get lots of these threads that never get any closure!

(also, some great recommendations of places I've n ever heard of, always useful!)

Blacklock soho has always been a (very) decent steak I think....

+1 for Sophie's in Chelsea.

If you are happy to venture into Central London then as mentioned already, Hawksmoor, Beast, Goodmans, Gaucho are some of the big steak places

Bentley's is a good mix of fish and meat. Nice outdoor seating too

I found the Big Easy very disappointing. The food was obviously cooked in a central kitchen and heated through on site. Really cramped seating too.

The Hawksmoor would be my first choice for steak.

The Mandarin Kitchen in Bayswater is sometimes good for seafood, which they specialise in. Their lobster noodles in ginger and spring onion is a classic. I say sometimes because it can be a bit variable, I guess it depends on the chef on duty, but when its good, it really hits the spot. Ask the waiter for what is good on that day seafood wise and follow their lead.

Hawksmoor is, as mentioned a couple of times, excellent.

I found Goucho unexceptional.

Which Big Easy did you go to? I went to to Covent Garden one last weekend and it was one of the worst meals out I've every had. Echo your thoughts on the food, it was obviously not cooked on site and was inedible as well as hideously over priced. Put me off ever trying them again (event the Kings Road one)./

Seem to remember feeling similar about the Covent garden one as well.

I went to the Big Easy branch in Chelsea. I imagine the food in all of them is the same, considering the central kitchen.

Sorry for the thread resurrection but better than starting a new one!

It is the GFs 50th in December and I mentioned perhaps going for a steak and some drinks in that London town. I'm not really that fussed on exact location but somewhere nice with pubs etc around would be great.

Is Hawksmoor still regarded as one of/ the best?

Also if anyone has a recommendation for hotels that would be ace too!

We'll be travelling into KIngs Cross/ St Pancras whatever it is called these days!

Hawksmoor's been pretty poor for me the last couple of visits.....
The Guinea Grill & Lurra (marylebone) both very good.
The Devonshire is the current fave - but you'll be lucky to get in.

What let you down about Hawksmoor? Admitedly not been for a couple of months now, but I don't think it has ever been less than excellent.

The Devonshire is that pub in Soho, right? I'd not heard of it until recently, seems it's the 'new hot spot in town'.......I'm trying to get a table in Nov, they open up their availability tomorrow.

Lurra is pretty good imo.

St Pancras hotel and Parillan in coal drop yards! All within walking distance and can walk along the canal during the day towards Camden market and onwards to Regent’s Park and Little Venice
