Do you say anything
Discussion
OH and I called into an Italian restaurant today.
Lovely place, friendly staff and the starters were great.
However we both had steaks and first of all my wife’s had to go back because it was overcooked (she like it blue). Second time they were cooked to perfection, well seasoned but poor quality meat. I’ve had better from Asda. It wasn’t the most expensive I’ve had but still.
Now we have steak regularly and this was disappointing.
We just paid and left but should we have said anything?
Would they want to know or would they just think we were after a freebie?
Not cooking it to your liking deserves sending it back
But if it was subsequently "cooked to perfection"; what you interpret as poor quality meat is a subjective
During or at the end of a meal, someone from the waiting staff usually asks if everything was OK. I would choose one of those moments to inform them that we are disappointed with the quality of the steak, despite it being cooked correctly. If nobody asks, I would raise it when paying the bill.
The restaurant may try to mitigate your dis-satisfaction - either with a discount, FOC course, bottle of wine, voucher, whatever.
However, you shouldn't feel entitled to that. If you get nothing; vote with your feet and just don't go back.

"Quality" is subjective to your taste, what was it you weren't happy with?
Just tough to chew, both medium rare and blue. If a blue steak is tough then something is wrong.rdjohn said:
In the end you tend to get what you pay for.
On the whole I agree. Fortunately this was a lunchtime menu so not ruinous but they were still 26 quid apiece on the main menu so deserving of a decent bit of meat. And yes I expect comments that unless it’s double that it’s cheap but the best steak I ever had was at a French restaurant on a 20 quid lunch menu so price doesn’t always reflect quality.Evoluzione said:
It"s what Trip Advisor is for.
Did they actually ask?
Trip advisor reviews were excellent. The starter was fine and the food going past our table looked amazing. Maybe as someone said above Italians can’t do steaks.Did they actually ask?
They didn’t actually ask except when my wife’s other steak came they asked her to cut into it to check it was cooked correctly which I thought was good.
I think the reason I didn’t say anything was although it was poor we still ate 75% of it (we were starving). I don’t want to be a Karen that clears the plate and demands a refund. But we definitely left feeling disappointed.
Considering how expensive eating out is getting, I'm starting to avoid it now as it is almost always disappointing.
Plus it ruins the occasion if you feel that you have to complain.
Went to a posh pub near my place to treat my old mum to one of their £20 Sunday Roasts. It didn't even come with roast potatoes, they were a £4 extra. It's a fking roast dinner FFS!
Only value one gets nowadays is at a Greasy Spoon.

Sadly, that's quite true these days. The costs now are shocking before you even risk a disapoinment.
We're still reeling from a bite to eat before a Micky Flanagan night near Leicester Square the other week: Two (admittedly very nice) salads, two glasses of wine and a beer which came out at £79! In a pub.
My mrs. is a great cook so can usually make something better than the local Indian restaurants, so we've knocked them on the head too.

Was out walking with a friend and she fancied a drink. Wanted to stop at a very posh looking hotel bar.
I managed to steer her to a more spit and sawdust sort of place. A real pub
2 glasses of white for her, 2 pints of cider for me and over £30 spent. Bonkers.

Same here, unless it is a steak specific restaurant.
I can usually cook a steak better than 95% of the restaurants, so usually spend my money on getting the best ingredients and cook them myself. The best steak I’ve had recently and my go to now is a Hawksmoor prime rib. Will set you back about £35-40, but will feed 2 very hungry people with some leftovers for a sandwich the following day. Unbelievable taste ant texture.

Hawksmoor is a restaurant chain.
