Folks,

Know nothing about rum. However want to get the nicest bottle I can for a friend who has done me a big car-related favour.

Non spiced.
Available from Singapore duty free!

Flor de Cana out of those for my taste. Zacapa centenario may work better as a gift tho.

Funnily enough I answered a similar question in another thread this week

Red rum: Appleton estate or Mount Gay Eclipse
White rum: J Wray & Nephew or Appleton again
Aged rum: Barbancourt

However, duty frees tend to only stock liquors from massive conglomerates, so not sure you’ll find anything like that

Thanks. Zacapa comes in a nice box so might be a winner.

What’s the difference with XO?

Appleton for the win.

Mount Gay for subtle.

Cockspur for the wildcard.

El Dorado 15 year old for the double win. Distilled in Guyana and IMHO the best. I first tried it on a trip to Guyana 21 years ago and was really taken with it - it’s been my thank you present for special deeds for the last few years. About £58 on Amazon.

23 is a blend of 6 to 23 yr old rums, xo is 6 to 25. the price is 2x more and bottle is 2x prettier but the product isn't 2x better.

zacapa is a marmite brand. whisky equivalent would be johnnie walker blue - heralded as being great by the general public but lambasted by the connoisseur. it has sugar added for one thing, which is a no no.

flor de cana is a better product, doesn't contain added sugar or colouring, but isn't the kind of flavour you associate with a rum. more floral, and the pricier ones aren't necessarily better. bought the eco 15 before xmas and found that to be pretty decent as a good quality mixer and ok straight up.

santa teresa might be a safer bet as a gift. lies somewhere between the 2 - flavour closer to zacapa but without [as much] added sugar, mix of rums up to 35yrs old. comes in a decent box and should satisfy whatever he does with it, sip or mix.

My favourite also, and in my opinion the 15yo is the sweetspot of the range (literally), though there will be some bias for me with my mother coming from there.

Something closer to home, this Pembrokeshire rum is very drinkable. A friend designed the label. No idea how it compares with expensive runs though.

Yep, noted… want to get it ASAP on my way back and since I’ve bought his family a few other things from abroad it’ll seem like I’ve gone to greater effort!

On the topic of rum, I was given a bottle of Botucal Reserva Exclusvia at Christmas. Can't say I've drunk rum through choice before - is it a good starting point? I would note I can't cope with whisky (wuss!) but I love port.
