It's that time of year when I have to take MrsSE to somewhere for her birthday dinner. We are staying in Cobham this weekend so any suggestions of a nice, not too pricey spot?

She is a northern lady of simple tastes so it doesn't need to be fancy, just nice. Previously this year she's enjoyed Panda Mami buffet and Herbie's American diner... But we are opento any suggestions.

Thank you in advance!

I would have a look at the Hand and Spear pub which is located next to Weybridge station (and next to Brooklands). Decent food and reasonable prices, not to fancy as it's a pub and won't take long to get to from Cobham.

In daylight The Anchor at Pyrford Lock would be nice.

Was pleasantly surprised at the food on offer at The Plough. Went there for a Sunday pub lunch a month or so ago.

Considering it’s where I did all my underage drinking in the mid 90s. It’s certainly changed!

Excellent suggestions, thank you! Will see what she decides on.

Or, more likely, where I decide after giving her a day to think about it ...

13 miles away - The Ostrich in Colnbrook.
Decent Gastropub - and very interesting history and the inspiration for Sweeney Todd.

They're under new management now, so you'll have to book.
We were most irritated when we dropped in at 1pm on a weekday to find a mostly empty pub, and they wouldn't give us a table for lunch. Ridiculous. It used to be a vibrant, busy pub that walkers, kayakers etc could drop in for some pub food. Seems not any more.

They also removed the kids play area too.
Very strange.

Another great gastro pub would be The Black Swan, Ockham. Very close by.

Excellent food and a lovely setting.

My hood...

Coppa Club is probably the best value for Cobham High Street.

Black Swan is a great shout but we don't get over regularly as it requires cabs (we're drinkers) and Uber is 'patchy' here.

Might have missed it but has the Running Mare been mentioned? https://therunningmare.com/

Best pub round here since the Old Plough seems to have gone downhill and The Victoria (Oxshott) is pricey.

Or The Waverley Inn, for the other side of the A3: https://www.thewaverleyinnweybridge.co.uk/

It's intended as a Classic Car and motorbike breakfast meet.

I didn't know that, thanks for the heads-up. Seems a bizarre decision though.

We've used the IVy at the bottom of the High Street a couple of times. Not cheap, but not silly expensive either.

Perhaps the theme varies from month to month. On this thread, however, it is a moot point for the OP's requirements but for future readers with nice vehicles, they may be also able to attend and to no be ushered into the field (where are was almost stranded in the FFRR, that would've been so embarrassing).

Excellent, there's a few here we've not been to, so we will add them to the list, thanks!

Welcome!

We haven't done the Ivy cafe in a while, I don't see the value, albeit it's a nice place to sit for an hour or two. Clearly doing well enough they're putting an Ivy Asia in, other end of the high st. behind Waitrose.

I like Grappelli but service can be hit and miss and it's also pricey. Often have some amazing, fresh fish and shellfish. Probably my favourite restaurant round here, but a treat.

A Casa on the Portsmouth road, opposite the Shell garage, for a good value/quality, family feel Italian is great.

I know people who love Beaverbrook but we went for our 2020 anniversary, to the Garden Room, and it was definitively the worst value meal of my life. We've never been back. Average food, cooked poorly, for a huge premium. YMMV.

Where did you hear that the Ivy Asia is coming to Cobham? Can’t see anything online, or think where it would go, unless it goes to that shop that’s shut down opposite Painshill? Would love an Ivy Asia nearby
