Does anyone else use the 'Too Good To Go' app and buy Magic Bags?

It's been mentioned on TV a couple of times in the past week and we've made a couple of purchases from a local patisserie, buying £12 worth of bread and pastries for £4.

It's always a gamble as you don't know what you'll receive but we haven't had any disappointments yet.

I signed up and looked at it but all it came up with was petrol station convenience stores about 8 miles away, not looked since.

I used it a good few times in London.
Greggs was the best with VFM £2.75.
Leon was also good at London Liverpool Street station and was fresh.
Pasty shop was rank certainly not £12, a small croissant and pasty.
Overall it's no good if your particular and want to choose instead of getting what you get.
Have since deleted the app as I prefer to choose.

On a similar vein, we found a Greggs outlet shop in Newcastle.

Same idea, a big bag of stuff for around £4

Yep, same here, did a Greggs bag once and to be fair it was good value, but driving there and back kinda defeats the object I feel.

I’ve used it a few times as a couple of local cafes put stuff on it. You have to be quick though and I assume the selection is better in cities than smaller towns etc.

I wouldn’t bother getting it for Greggs or whatever.

Mrs Thingus has it on her phone and looks occasionally

As has been said, you have to be quick and selective

Once went for a Greggs one at about 8pm at night and a brand new range rover pulled up and tarted up women jumped out, strolled in and collected 2 of the cheap bags!

Also getting the train home from Leeds once Mrs checked the app and the pastry booth was on it so managed to get a couple of really nice cornish for a few quid that would normally have been close to a tenner

I have used it when I work from my city centre office. Some interesting late breakfast and lunch options within walking distance of the office.

I've recently stumbled on this, found some really good local stuff at the various bakeries that are fine for the following days lunch. Will experiment a bit more with restaurants. Probably not for fussy eaters.

Absolutely brilliant.

For £5, my best haul was £85.55 worth of food at full retail price - two massive bags. The 'worst' £45.75 worth.

The trick is to find a petrol station with an M&S or Little Waitrose attached, where you get the packaged retail item, properly refrigerated.

Anything that's unpackaged / been sitting out all day in the hot cabinet can FRO, much as staff beg me to take it.

Pastries I give away since I don't eat them. Plenty of takers at work. Packs are sealed so the contents are good for a few days.

Everything else, I freeze and then meal plan around. Even salad can be frozen and stirred into a curry as you would spinach.

I’ve used it a few times. We get a decent selection of outlets at home, ranging from supermarkets to local coffee shops and even a nearby chippy. However, we’re away on holiday in North Norfolk at the moment and there is very little decent stuff up for grabs within a 30km radius.
We even had a bag from our local Aldi the other week and it kept us in fruit and vegetables for a week. Great value!

In London I’ve used this and done really well out of Paul (bakery), Maitre Choux (patisserie), a cupcake place on a few stations and one time a kebab place in Claphan. That was a ridiculous amount of different meats, several cartons of salads and sauces pmus around 9 pitta breads.
In Manchester I’ve had all sorts from shops, takeaways, bakeries etc.

Just scored another for tomorrow! biggrin

Waitrose are heavily pushing the 'summer deli' picnicky / BBQ type items at the moment, however in the current awful weather, there's no picnicking / BBQing going on.

All the more for me.

We had a meeting with presentation about this at work.
It was decided it was pointless as the only wastage was either out of date or unsuitable for resale anyway.

I've tried it a few times, but it is mainly stuff I wouldn't normally have. We haven't got a lot of fancy food outlets around here anyway, so the choice is always going to be quite limited.

I got a bag from the local Greggs, £2 for a couple of sausage rolls, a pasty and a cake wasn't incredible value. I've tried the local Subway one many times, after a dozen goes of getting a message to say "we haven't got any spare food today" the night before, I finally got a bag - £2.20 for three cookies and five foot-long rolls (empty) didn't seem bad. The trouble was that by the time I got to the last roll, it was quite stale, so maybe try freezing them next time. And they're usually really inconvenient times to collect around here, too - I don't want to be making a special trip really.

All this lot today - £5.

2 packs spinach falafels 190g each
Herb falafels 200g
Red pepper hummous 200g
No 1 salted caramel chocolate tart 520g
Custard slices (2 in pack)
Lemon and raisin danish (2 in pack)
Melon trio 220g
Berry medley 230g
Mini carrots 340g
British new potatoes 750g
Deli coleslaw 300g
Onken yogurt 500g
Cacio e pepe potato salad 250g
Tabbouleh salad 185g
Go veggie burgers (2)

Fruit will be frozen (smoothies / cocktails), falafels and hummous frozen for office lunches, cakes given away, salads and burgers eaten over the next few days. Raw vegetables last ages.

Anything not raw meat or fish is good for a couple of days past the 'use by' date. For home consumption, obviously.

I'm in the boonies, so need to travel 9km or so for fuel anyway.

Not sure what kind of people you're referring to, but I myself managed 2 £2.99 carvery boxes (one meat, one veg) in one sitting, so i'm slightly concerned the people in your example may not be well individuals...

TooGoodToGo is a great idea, however I fear the people it would be of more use to aren't using it. I used it at the start of Covid as a novelty, however given I was 'cherry picking' what I liked out of each bag and not trying to make use of every last scrap, then decided the bags would probably be better used by other punters and deleted the app. Great concept though, hats off to whoever conceived the app and rolled it out, good now it's being adopted at so many places too.

Best I had was a £20 bag from Farmison & Co: proper butchers bacon, 4 x 6 packs of sausages, 4 x steaks, butchers ham, superb stuff cool
