Currently drinking a very agreeable red - Domaine Maurel Cuvee Tradition - and I wanted to see what is in everyone elses wine rack?

Blossom Hill wink

Not really but it would be nice if this thread goes somewhere as I'd like to expand my wine tastes beyond buying whatever is on offer in the supermarket.

I had a unusual bottle a few weeks back, a Californian Cabinet Sauvignon that had been aged in Bourbon barrels. Not sure if I like it or not, bit odd drinking a wine that sort of tastes of wine but also of Jack Daniels, wasn't horrible just unusual. https://www.aldi.co.uk/bourbon-aged-cabernet-sauvi...

For a dessert wine, if you want to go off-piste I can recommend Malamado - a Malbec.

Had this in my local French restaurant a year and a half ago and still think it's fantastic. In fact I'll be there tonight for my birthday drinking this:

Lovely wine and great value. smile

Thanks. Was introduced to Cotes Du Rhone earlier in the year after not having much exposure to it - and really enjoyed it. I had this one - https://www.corneyandbarrow.com/corney-barrow-cote... - (can you tell where I order my wine from!) but I'll order the Terre du Mistral you recommend and give it a try.

For a supermarket wine, you'll really struggle to beat this: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/the-hedonis...

I'm not a shiraz fan, but this is something else.

Red Rioja is my go to and Faustino V is a very good affordable option - much better than the I in my opinion.

I'm a big Cotes Du Rhone and Languedoc red wine fan, look out for the classic blend: GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) is usually a winner for me and pretty reliable.

The wines are usually lighter in style, not so heavy (as opposed to Aussie, Californian or Tuscan), but yet have great flavour and character. Plus usually good value too.

This is fantastic. It has gone up a bit in price recently, but I still think it's pretty decent value.

If we are talking daily drinkers then I think you can do worse than the Aldi Animus Douro for £5 a time (was voted best value wine of 2018 by the Guardian, so far).

If you are talking favourites then Tyrrells 1, a decent Cote Rotie or (if someone else is paying) Opus 1 is a no brainer.

Plenty of better wines available but unless you are into £100+ a bottle....

I don't bother keeping wines anymore, cant afford to buy and store by the case so just have in what I can or eventually want to drink!

Top Tip? Join the wine society. Sounds a bit snooty, I know, but wine wise, its the best move I've ever made, they really do offer crackig stuff.

This is one of the best whites I've ever had, always have a couple of cases , same superb quality, year in, year out. Superb bang for buck

Living in Austria. Since I’ve arrived I think I’ve had one bottle of foreign wine, and everything else has been Austrian. It’s fantastic. I don’t tend to stick to one vineyard, but we live in a wine region so it’s hard to run out of wines to buy. All wines seem to be between €5-€15. If you can find it in England, it’s worth a go. There are some big vineyards which are probably exporting.

Grape types to look out for:
Zweigelt
Blaufrankish
Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon

Sauvignon Blanc
Gruner vetliner
Chardonnay
Gelber or roter muskateller

Thirded, though the price hikes annoy me, one particular wine I buy goes up fifty by pence each time I order. Must be the pound &/or brexcrap.

I also keep an eye on Lidl's offerings. Have had some surprisingly good wines. For example, currently they're offering Les Figuerettes Picpoul de Pinetpoul for 6.99. Cracking good value.

+2 this. I used to be a wine merchant (very briefly before the credit crunch....) and I use wine soc as one of my 'go to' places to buy wines for myself.

And shameless plug: if you're really into quirky, quality Italian wines, try my friend's place:

There is a shop near me, it sells the usual corner shop Jacob's Creek and Barefoot Pinot Grigio, but recently they've started to specialise in highly discounted bin ends of fairly uncommon fine (ish) wine from the wholesaler (so the owner says... it could actually be counterfeit or stolen, apparently becoming a more and more common ocurrence).

I've picked up some Hambledon English Sparkling for £12 (normally £20+), Gruner Veltliner for £6 and a 2012 Barolo for £10. As far as me and my wife (who was a wine merchant for a few years) can tell, its the real stuff and a decent drop, and we haven't spotted any spelling mistakes on the labels. Though I still have my doubts due to the pricing. I guess I'll find out when I go blind from the antifreeze...

Not quite in the spirit of the thread since I’m not recommending a specific bottle, but as others have said, The Wine Society is really good. We’re on their ‘wine without fuss’ (or something like that) deal and get a different mixed case delivered every month. We mix the essentials and discovery cases most months and then get one of the more expensive ones in the run up to Christmas.

They’ve all been great and we've ended up with varieties and regions we’d never have picked ourselves.

Fourthed.... really good wine from £ 6-7 to £x. Their own ranges (and exhibition) are a great starting place to explore without much knowledge.

Sainsbury’s Carnivor Zinfandel

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/car...

£10 but occasionally down to £8.50

If you like a full bodied wine, this is fantastic.
