Hi All,

I have recently moved to Reading. Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent beer shop in the area that sells stuff from smaller breweries.

Ideally i'm looking for somewhere that stocks beavertown beers.

Cheers,
James

Not sure about places actually in Reading but the Loddon brewery isn't far away, not actually visited their shop to know how wide a range they sell though. the Hogs Back brewery is about half an hour south of you and does have a pretty well stocked shop though.

Grumpy goat in the Harris Arcade, it's also a cheese shop so it stinks a bit.

If you want a st hot selection of Beavertown beers, head to Bitter Virtue in Southampton it's an Aladdin's cave and has some truly rare rare beers and an unbeatable selection. Tiny little shop. Failing that going really far out from Reading, Beers of Europe in Kings Lynn has a great selection, that said I'd imagine the brewery (Tottenham court road from memory?) Probably has a shop.

But for Reading area Grumpy Goat

I also live in Reading and am a member of 2 local micro breweries. There's also a very quaint (odd) pub in the centre which sells decent ales / beers.

Another vote for the Grumpy Goat - most excellent. And they deliver for free within a couple of miles IIRC. Great selection of decent beers.

If you want a pub, the Nags Head is supposed to be good. I've not tried it myself, but I know a couple of people who have and they say it's excellent for beer.

What she said.

The Nags is my all time favourite pub. A real honest pub with a proper turnover of casks.

As for beer shops the Harris arcade one is good. Also if you venture west of reading but 30 mins to a place called yattendon you'll find the west Berkshire brewery and another fave pub the royal Oak.

Head north towards Oxford you've got hobgoblin/breakspears brewery.

Just south of Reading you also have Siren, who have recently opened their own taproom - so no doubt you could pick up some of their stuff there.

Castle tap is st, always empty and no atmosphere plus the bearded that owns or Co owns it is a cut. No brainer, nags every time, the fact it's always rammed tells it's own story.

BTW I think sirens tap room closed in 2015?

Ale house has a very local vibe, I don't like that place. Reminds me of the slaughtered lamb everyone stops when you walk in lol.

Fox and Hounds in Caversham is another good pub, not as "Camra" as the Nags, probably a younger crowd. But a damned fine boozer if you're that side of town. The other hidden gems in Reading are The Retreat and The Foresters Arms.

Was in the nags head yesterday with a few from work. Seemed to be a pretty decent beer collection (tho I don't drink it).

grumpy goat in the Harris arcade seem to have quite a few too

Wouldn't know about beavertown specifically tho

Hop-In on the Henley Rd usually has a nice selection of local beers. It can be a bit hit and miss but last week I picked up some bottles from Binghams, West Berkshire Brewery, Marlow Brewery, and Loddon. Really pretty impressive for what is just a local off-licence.

I'm planning to go back tomorrow as some of them were damn fine lick

These guys are not too far away in Newbury and carry a very good range of beers, including Beavertown:

Was just going to suggest that.

Worth looking in M&S as they sell a few craft beers now and always on 3 for 2

Went to a Siren craft Ale thing at south Street arts centre in march-ish. Lovely ales but seriously bad head and guts for a day or two afterwards.

Hopleaf on Southampton st used to have a good selection of ales and takeouts. But that was a few years back.

Ale House is a fine example of tarting up a pub but the regulars making everyone else feel inferior. Awful place. It's always been like that. One of them knocked a beer out of my friends hand once and got us chucked out.

Global cafe does a good line in craft ales from local area.
