London restaurant recommendations

Morning all

Sitting at work doing nothing at all for the day, i've been thinking about how easy my missus makes mine and the kids lives. She has a real bad cold at the moment but she doesn't ever complain. A mothers work is never done and she just soldiers on without a moan.

When the kids go to bed, she sits down and watches them soaps and Masterchef. She loves the programme. It's got me thinking as a little treat, I'll take her to a right posh gaff.

Now of course La Gavroche would be the obvious choice, seeing as its Michel Roux's place, but I thought I'd get some ideas from the PH massive as to where they might recommend. I'd like some Michelin recognition with the place and ideally situated in London so we could visit Hyde Park and the Winter Wonderland.

If you're thinking about Le Gavroche, then do it. You might find getting a reservation tricky though.

There's also Roux at the Landau, but frankly it's a bit st.

Unless you're happy with a Monday lunchtime table, you might find (as we run up to Xmas) that you're limited by where you can get it. Also consider Dinner by Heston and all the other usual suspects.

I was disappointed in Dinner. Competent but not original. The Ledbury was simply sensational though. Best meal I had anywhere in the world in 2012.

It's a bit hard to recommend as you don't give any prefs regarding food choices, dates, or if it's just you and the wife as opposed to the whole family.

Thanks for the replies.

It'll be the missus and myself only. No preference in cuisine, just a good restaurant with a good reputation and a reservation this side of Christmas would be great.

She deserves it. I deserve a McDonalds!

I quite like Hix Soho, Randall and Aubin or Quo Vadis, (used to live next door!) or the old staple of The Ivy if your missus is into 'slebs.

Yes. Nice place but they are bit naughty insofar as their menu prices exclude vat so by the time you add vat plus service charge the total is wildly different from what you expect

Thanks for all your input.

I've decided to go with La Gavroche. The earliest we could get in (at a reasonable 7.30) was 20 something of January. Seeing as its a surprise for the missus, I've bridged the waiting time with Veeraswamy's just before Christmas.

Hopefully we won't have reason to grumble over these two places.

If there's any experiences on either, I'd be very grateful
