Rubbish kitchen equipment and utensils
Discussion
Have you noticed when in other people's kitchens, often their equipment is almost impossible to use? I'm talking about:
Glass chopping boards
Blunt knives
Thin cheap pans with plastic handles
Ceramic hobs
Wooden spoons in place of spatulas
I know it's a crap thread, but how do these people manage?

What's wrong with ceramic hobs?
And wooden spoons, for that matter?
Ceramic hobs are utterly awful. They take forever to heat up, and forever to cool down. The only way to really control the heat in a pan is to take it on and off the hob. I hate mine with a passion. And wooden spoons, for that matter?
Nowt wrong with wooden spoons, though, when used for the right sort of thing.
Glass chopping boards are just totally horrible.

I have ceramic, they heat up very quickly, are we on about the same thing? It looks like smoked glass on the top. I would much rather have gas but there is none where I live sp I am forced to choose electric. It is by far the best electric hob I have ever used.Nowt wrong with wooden spoons, though, when used for the right sort of thing.

You might have induction. Looks like ceramic, works like gas. I would like one (we are in the same position as you - no gas in the village) but the house came with a brand new double width range cooker so replacement with something better would be ££££
No, I bought this one.http://markselectrical.co.uk/444440994_Stoves-Indu...
I also found this, "Ceramic Hobs have halogen, radiant or semi-halogen heating elements under a heat resistant glass. Halogen is a bulb with a tungsten element and halogen gas. Semi-halogen is a halogen bulb surrounded by a radiant element.
They often have timers, sensors, switches and touch controls. They can even let you know when the hob is cool.
These models are generally viewed as the most effective and are also the most expensive.
Halogen has a faster response than radiant and has been described as electricity's answer to gas, though it cannot match gas for speed and control."

Can I add:
Cheap non-stick pans where the non-stick coating is flaking off into whatever you cook in it
Pastry brushes that shed bristles everywhere
Blunt can-openers that don't open cans properly
Knives with the tip broken off (a common occurence in my parents house where my dad uses the knifes as makeshift screwdrivers)

Holiday lets - even those charging £000's a week - always have the s
ttiest kitchen utensils.
How difficult is it to provide one decent knife and a sharpener?
Moreover, pans. The heavier they are, the less likely to be stolen, surely?

It comes from the same school of thought that means B&Bs and hotels feel happy to serve s
t sausages and bacon. When visiting friends who don't really cook, there kitchens are usually full of the following:
As mentioned by others glass chopping boards (usually with cheap blunt knives to go with them), silly small chopping boards the size of a postage stamp, that it is a challenge to chop a garlic clove. Cheap ally fry pans that either just stew or burn food, as they can't hold the heat. Rubbish hobs, to go with the cheap and nasty fry pans etc...

There's nothing wrong with a wooden spoon - for the correct job such as mixing or beating something. But why do people use old crappy wooden spoon to stir say, a simmering bolognese when you need to remove the food in direct contact with the pan bottom.
Even worse of course is metal utensils on non stick pans.
I'm pleased most of you feel the same way.
Agree also on the tiny chopping boards. Wtf am I supposed to chop on that?

I do agree that shabby, not fit for purpose, items should be banned from life. My earlier defence of ceramic hobs was not out of defence, it was out of fear that I had bought something s
t. I used to live in Spain and some of the electric hobs out there took forever to warm up and it was impossible to put any pan level on them because the coil was always at a jaunty angle.I nominate garlic presses where the bulk of the garlic escapes UP into the press from the sides of the presser, instead of going through the holes.
