Lidl Shopping List!

Never ventured in to one, but might risk it tonight!

I think MC (amongst) others has mentioned their cold (spicy?) meats as well as their jarred curry sauces. What else peculiar to Lidl might the PH foodies recommend?

I intend to buy a couple of Slow-Cooker recipes' worth as well so there may well be a mixture of pork bits, beef bits, sausages, bbq sauces, etc etc thrown in the trolley.

Any other thoughts and recommendations greatfully received.

Lidl would be my preference though as its much closer.

Cray fish tails in the chiller cabinet (in a small tub)

They do a triple pack of pizza (margarita) very nice indeed.

Port - £3.00 per bottle - very good

Amereto - £5.00 per bottle

Cherry Brandy - £6.00 pb

In truth, everything's cheaper at Lidl. Quality is comparable with own-label, often substantially better.

However the real stars for me are:

- Fruit and veg
- Garlic in a basket - these look like 'bulbs' but each 'bulb' is one massive clove - 1/4 of the peeling, hehe
- Tinned tomatoes - the 'Sardona' polpo di pomodoro in various flavours are nice and chunky
- Hot dogs in jars
- Whole smoked mackerel
- Various fishy things in cans - the kippers in oil are good
- 'Crusti Croc' pretzels
- 'VitAsia' rice crackers
- 'VitAsia' instant noodles - 18p a packet
- Curry sauce as mentioned
- 'Floralys' moist toilet tissue - especially if you've added extra chilli to the above...

I thought that, but I tried the Lidl offering and didn't like it.

It seems to be from a different species than the usual lumpfish: the eggs are smaller, harder, and they don't have much flavour.

Of course there's a limit to exactly how much one can fit in an Elise, but where there's a will...

I bought a stepladder and 2 x 20 litre bags of potting compost too

Now that's a point, time to ferret out the countless grape/fruit plastic punnets I've
saved over autumn and winter ..time to get the carrots , Spring onions , etc going...

Might even do some more Butternut squash, if I have the patience again.

Potting compost is only 99p for a 20-litre bag at Lidl. The same size at a nearby garden centre is £3.99...

veg and fruit was good last week , Pink Lady apples were lovely , swede and greens were cheap and nice have you tried the winter swedish cider yet? Must try the port next time.

Two experiences to venture: chicken breasts were a tad watery; lamb neck chops were a good dark red and fine in a curry.

However, I'm rather in two minds about Lidl meat having pondered on it further. I wonder whether welfare standards have been compromised somewhere along the way in order to sell it so cheaply.

Cruelty to fruit and vegetables I can deal with. Cruelty to animals, no.

The best slow-cooking cuts (imho) are shoulders, legs, and tails - none of which Lidl sell.

On the whole,their meat is fairly mediocre like most supermarkets. However my local does still free range chickens, and at a reasonable price - c. £5.

To the OP - Greek yogurt in the big tubs, and avocados. Plus they have roses and fruit trees on offer if you're a gardener.

Cashews are good and good value, smoked salmon is good and the frozen prawns are tasty if allowed to defrost on their own.

Frikadele is ace as are their bratwurst, and they do a souperb chicken and pasta massive tin of soup.

Brahma beer is a bargain at £8 per box.
