Old Pulteney single malt

Bought a bottle of Old Pulteney single malt 12 year old which is a brand I have had before. However this one has a strong mouldy and musty taste and smell. Most unpleasant, I have never bought a bad bottle of whisky ever. Anyone had a similar experience of a bad or gone off whiskey .

I'd like to know what Asda say to you.
Not my favourite - maybe prejudiced as this was the worst distillery tour we have ever done (out of about 20 so far).
Drams do change over time. But so do we. Off days - wrong food earlier etc.
I recall a very bad B N J experience last year. And it was all down to my palette over a week / half a bottle. Didn't feel ill, but the second half of the bottle was 'normal'.

I had a bottle of whisky that had an odd burnt plastic taste. Tried several times over several weeks and couldn't place if it was me or the whisky. Spoke to distillery rep, had a replacement bottle sent and it was night and day better.
Mind you, was also very ready to write grovelly emails apologising for my appalling taste buds, but distillery could not have been nicer about it.

I may be wrong, but maybe better going to the distillery? Asda will probably give you a new bottle and chuck the old one. If the distillery get your bottle back, they may get to the bottom of the problem and see if it's affecting a batch or something. While Old Pulteney isn't one of my favourites either, it definitely shouldn't taste mouldy. And one of the whisky polls conducted amongst the tasters / experts absolutely raved about it - think it won Malt of the Year 2010? So it definitely should taste reasonably palatable.
As above, use the distillery rather than Asda. Wonder if you could take a sample from the bottle, return the whole bottle to Asda and send the sample to the distillery? Worth a phone call or an e-mail at least.

At least you got a tour, we turned up on spec in an early mid week afternoon, and the place was deserted, bonded warehouse wide open, not a soul to be found..

As I was born in Caithness, not far from the Distillery as it happens I can confirm you are correct I think they take things as it comes in Caithness

We turned up at 1.55 for 2.00 - and they had already started !!
OK - we hadn't booked in advance unlike the other couple - maybe because the place was all locked up when we arrived earlier.
