Another vote for the fish & chip place in the square at the bottom of Laugevegur, probably the cheapest meal you'll get in the city. We found a fairly nice veggie place called Á Næstu Grösum on the 1st floor of a building on Laugevegur too, opposite the tin shack style coffee place but its appeal does depend on you wanting a meat and fish free meal...
there is a place down bankastraeti that does about a gallon of thick chunky soup in a bread (well, entire round loaf) bowl, and beer. Cheap as anything (relatively) and to be honest awesome if you've been up a glacier all day. Can't remem the name but it's upstairs and looks a bit like a pub/bar
Oh, there are no McDonalds anymore either! Their franchise standards are so strict that the owner was having to import onions from Germany because there were no approved suppliers in Iceland so they binned it and now run their own burger joints (and make much better margins!) sourcing from local suppliers instead.
