I'm 50 this year and am quite adventurous when it comes to food, so I didn't think there was much close to home that I hadn't tried, however.....

1 - Quince jelly - recommended by someone on here on a cheese board thread. Got some before Christmas and it's fab stuff, I like chutneys and pickles, but this stuff is the best of anything I've ever had to go with cheese.

2 - BBQ leg of lamb - I'm sure I've had BBQ lamb before, but tonight I did this on the Weber after having marinaded it for a day and it was the best lamb I've ever had. I love crispy fat on lamb and it was looking a bit uncooked on the outside so the last 15 mins had me playing at cave-man with an oven glove on (not so cave-man)turning it over with the bone over the coals and lid off to crisp up the skin, much satisfying glow in the dark and leaping flames when the fat hit the charcoal.

3 - Devils on horseback (prunes wrapped in streaky bacon) - tonight again, picked up a pack for 75p, down from £2.99 at the supermarket. Aware of them but never thought of them as anything special and never been offered them so never tried before. Did them on the BBQ next to the lamb, again wonderful stuff, how did I live so long without discovereing this wonderful combination?

Anything relatively ordinary but really good you've just found out about?

I learnt a way to carve leg of lamb this weekend, made a big difference to making the meal and how the meat could be eaten.

I had always struggled previously

I've been smoking a lot of my own food recently - the standout of which has to be home-made bacon. Easy to do and (to my mind...) a lot tastier than anything shop bought.

Failing that, this:

biltong. had always thought it to be akin to horrible american beef jerky, but it turns out i was mistaken.

had some from a local SA butchers [nils and robby in dubai] and it's really rather good. i love cured/air dried italian pork, i now love the beefy saffer version.

thought the one i had needed more flavour though, but a quick google seems the brand is well regarded by local SA expats.

Marmite about 6 months ago. Knew about it for years, but considering the mixed reviews it is famous for, I never bothered trying it.

I absolutely love the stuff now.

Smoothies.

I recently treated myself to a Waring blender, predominantly for crushed ice cocktails - vodka + watermelon + ice lick

(Plus it looks nice.)

However being on a bit of a New Year health kick I thought I'd have a go at smoothies. A splash of yogurt, a banana and some blueberries later, I have to concede these are quite nice.

Off topic - cut the melon into chunks and freeze it, then you don't have to water it down with ice beer

Back on topic, cheese with honey and walnuts.

I live on these through the Summer with fresh fruit. Although I keep tubs of frozen forest fruits in the freezer, also eliminates the need for ice. Handfuls of frozen fruit, a banana and half glass of milk. So quick, easy, refreshing and healthy. Bloody lovely.

Another one I picked up in Amsterdam... (it's like a 'cure') is three kiwis, pear juice (not from concentrate - Lidl sell at 99p for large carton), handful of ice and juice of a lime (or lemon). Unbelievably refreshing.

Oh, and then there's the adult milkshakes... Barnamint Baileys with Oreos is my favourite.

More recent discoveries are that Chapel Down is the most perfect aperitif to accompany Oysters.

Oreo Truffles are simple to make and utterly divine covered in white chocolate.

And the limited edition Chase Oak Smoked Vodka is just wonderful neat from the freezer with some Olives and ham on the bone to graze on.

Picture stolen from Google - Lamb skewers. I marinate chunks of lamb in garlic, chilli, yoghurt, honey, lemon and tomato puree. Bake for 15 minutes then finish under the grill (or BBQ). So easy and delicious.

An admission of ingredients I recently 'discovered':

When you are feeling so lazy you can't be bothered to chop chilli/garlic I've been using these and they taste fine.

The 'tongue' is the gonad/coral/organ inside which the eggs (roe) or sperm cells are.
