What is the score with a jacket requirement for dinner at a hotel.

Would just a shirt and trousers be ok?

Don't really do suits anymore. I fact since quiting the South East I don't even own one.

What's the etiquette?

Depends on the hotel surely?

It's not something I've met but then I don't go to 5-star hotels!

FFS I don't think even Gordon and Heston would demand that you wear a jacket.

If the hotel have said jacket is required for dinner, then a jacket is required for dinner. What's there to question?

When I dine out, and 'hotel', the one thing that strikes me the most, is how damn scruffy people have become.

It's really very sad.

Surely the paying customer should be able to wear what they want within reason. There's no dress code at the Fat Duck and everyone was appropriately attired when I went, ie smart jeans, shirts, etc.

I do find the idea of someone that I'm paying telling me how to dress somewhat patronising. And in my experience, dress requirements are frequently ignored anyway.

yes If you're unhappy with the dress code I'm sure there are plenty of other establishments that will let you dress as you please.

You can dress how you like at McDonald's...

Gordon does specify jacket required in some places.

Not correct.

Personally I think having a dress code in most places is no bad thing.

I hear so of the more 'modern' establishments even allow women these days.

It means smart attire -if you want to wear jeans go elsewhere...you won't be welcome at this establishment.

Replies are starting to get a bit harsh. I'm with the op here (only wear suits for business meetings and not for a meal at the weekend.

Most places are less pompous than some of these replies... smart jeans, shirt & shoes are fine.
Enjoy your meal!

Chill out guys. In was only asking if it was something that basically meant dress smartly or is a full on dinner jacket required.

So where are you going then? Tell us the venue and I'm sure you'll get lots of smart answers.

It means a normal 'business' type suit, a blazer and trousers or even a 'sports jacket' and trousers.

A bit harsh? Seriously? A dress code which says jackets are required for dinner is surely self-explanatory isn't it? If there really is any sort of grey area then a quick call to the establishment in question will supply the resolution. This thread is pointless and the OP deserves everything he gets.

I agree with you that a quick call to the hotel would clear it up.

But still no need to be a bell end about it
