If you don't mind going to Hitchin, which is 10 or 15 minutes away, I can suggest trying:

Just 32
The Radcliffe Arms
Sukatawee

A nearby village Shillington has:

The Musgrave Arms
The Crown (both owned by the same people, I have an inkling they have stopped doing food at one due to spreading themselves too thin)

Another nearby village called Gosmore has:

The Bull

If you want mega-good, a little further afield is Redcoats in Redcoat's Green.

There are also quite a few good places in Harpendon which is only a few miles away.
I know a few people that say the Bean Tree is very good. http://www.thebeantree.com/

The Fox at Willian is a very good gastro-pub http://www.foxatwillian.co.uk/

Or Redcoats http://www.redcoats.co.uk/

Both within very easy striking distance of Luton airport.

ETA - Ooops, just noticed Redcoats has already been mentioned above - it is very good mind you!

I'll second that one too - both very good.

The Bean Tree is much less formal (and a bit more wallet-friendly).

Many thanks for your help, Mrs Majordad will book us and I'll let you know in two weeks time how we do.

BTW, any nice Indian Restaurants near here ? We would choose that as there are none where we live.

Just to let you all know we went to the Fox at Willian last Sat on your advice. Very nice and tasty fare and reasonably priced food and wines for what we got. We booked, lucky as it was full and busy but service was good and not slow.

One mistake we made, we arrived to the village and went into the pub to find they did not have our booking. They said they do not do bookings anyway and gave us a small A4 size laminated menu which looked not at all like we expected. We were about to order whaen I asked " was this the Fox " and was told Oh no, thats the one across the road !!!! Silly me. They were very nice about it .

I'm too late to this, but there are plenty of Indian Restaurants in Luton/ The friendliest with very good food is the Dildar in Sundon Park, however if you want real food, then there's a few on the edge of Bury Park, formica tables, plastic chairs, often a choice only of meat or veggie options, but well worth doing for lunch just to find out what real Indian and Bengali food tastes like.
