A few anchovies straight from the jar is one of my favourite snacks, (goes well with some olives), but a few litres of milk is essential during the night.

Now New Zealand isn't that big, so only small jars are available. Went to Brisbane last week to see my daughter.........and in the local supermarket was a 560g vat of anchovies. SWMBO and my daughter wouldn't let me buy it!

Bugger.

Anchovies, food of the devil or food of the gods?

I think they're great, they add loads of flavour to the likes of stuffed peppers and pizza.

Best thing ever.

When making Thai curry the other day I was looking at the label on the bottle of Thai fish sauce... turns out it's basically liquid anchovy! biggrin

I quite like them when you get them canned or in a jar. I am much less fond of them when they're fresh, as I found them quite stringy and unpleasant then.

I picked up a can of anchovies the other day for use as a healthy topping on a pizza and they turned out to be unsalted, sort of like mini-sardines not the brown salty strip I wanted. Most disappointing.

One of the cheffy type on TV swears by anchovy puree, with this in mind I have some in my cupboard but don't really now what to put it in!

I've never tried anchovies. American TV shows have always made me curious (as they're usually associated with pizza). Would love to try some... eventually.

They would have been in oil. You need to pat them with a kitchen towel to get most of the oil off, then salt them and put them on the pizza.

Mashh 3-4 up with garlic cloves and butter. Put mixture in the fridge and then put a slice to melt on a freshly cooked steak.

Lovely.

I used to be a really fussy eater as a kid, so many things I hated including fish. But finding the anchovy within a tuna nicoise salad is possibly one of my favourite things now!

they make a cracking sauce to go with pork loin;

- slice 8 anchovies
- juice of half a lemon
- a clove of garlic finely sliced
- half tsp of dijon mustard
- tbs olive oil
- ground pepper

I haven't bought anchovies for a while, now added to shopping list.
They also work with lamb shanks.
