Been offered half or full of Saddleback xlarge white from a friend. What are these like? Full weighs in at 70kg.
£95 for half, £185 for full reasonable? Will it be tasty?
£185/70Kg = £2.64 per Kg. £95 for half, £185 for full reasonable? Will it be tasty?
The cheapest pork at my local supermarket (mince, so possibly including lips and *rseholes) is £4.99 per Kg. Taste will depend on how the animal was reared, but at that price, I'd go for it.
Presuming this is a whole carcass you'll have to butcher yourself (which could be interesting), but I'd imagine you could get someone in to help in exchange for a piece? If I had the freezer space, I'd be all over such an offer like the measles.
But please, if you do decide to go ahead, use all of the animal? Even if the head and trotters feed the dog for a few days, it's only fair on the pig.

Thanks, but sadly not. I'm in Surrey, which explains why pork mince is £4.99/Kg.
Interesting, the difference in price by area... here in Rochester (North Kent), prices for Pork Mince are :
Sainsbury : £3.50/kg
Waitrose : £4/kg
Tesco : £4/kg
Asda : £5.26/kg
(although Asda also does "Pork And Beef Mince" at just £2.98/kg.)
Whichever way you look at it though, that Saddleback looks to be a real bargain!

Interesting that despite Asda's low-price positioning, meat costs more there than anywhere else. Not the first time I've noticed it.

I should also point out...1) The Sainsbury mince was £2.00 for 500g of mince (i.e. £4/kg), but had a "buy two for £3.50" offer. Which is fair enough, i.e. a small discount for buying more mince.
2) The Waitrose and Tesco ones, also 500g packs, were at a very inflated £8/kg. But they were on a "buy one get one free" offer, making the end price £4/kg. Which means you aren't actually getting anything for free, as they effectively doubled the price in the first place. This kind of promotion should be BANNED, in my opinion.
Another scam is to label meat and veg with a sticker offer at a given price for a pack.
On the face of it, £8 for 4 thick-looking slices of rump steak seems like a good deal, but watch the per Kg price - if this is even shown, of course.
Notice how scales where you can weigh items yourself (and thereby calculate per Kg prices) are gradually disappearing from supermarkets?
Absolute fargging con.

If you drive past Connahs Quay power station in Flintshire there are signs up offering pigs for sale, £60 and lambs £40. How come those are so cheap? Ive never stopped but always been tempted.
Always tempted to do it for a hog roast, my dogs would eat the left overs.
You'd like to think these were being offered for sale at 'abbatoir gate' prices for animals legally slaughtered and inspected as fit for human consumption. Always tempted to do it for a hog roast, my dogs would eat the left overs.

I'd investigate further before buying.
