Oven thermometer
Discussion
Anyone got any recommendations for an oven thermometer? I've had a Salter one before, but for some reason I was never that convinced it was accurate as food always seemed to brown quicker than I'd expect.
Amazon has a "Heston Blumenthal" one (by Salter, natch) with "precision" in the name that's appealing

I suspect you mean the type which measures the internal temperature of say, a joint, in which case - no idea.
However I'd urge anyone who bakes bread / cakes (or is thinking of starting) to get an oven thermometer to validate the temperature setting on the dial. I had some horribly burnt loaves until I invested £4.99 in one of these.
Could it be that the oven is running hotter than you think?

I have one of these...

It has a sensor in the tip for measuring the internal temp of the meat, and one on the back of the dial for measuring oven temp. Works really well.

^^ That looks good, but doesn't the meat probe get in the way?
MC, I do mean an oven thermometer, so what do you use?

Maybe I was lucky in that mine actually works. (It's a Chinese cheapie.)
However I like the fact that you can either stand it up or hang it from a shelf.
What about a 'Temp Gun'? great fun if nothing else lots of them on ebay.
Hell Jamie Oliver uses them so they must be quite good.

The VILLA ovens have integral thermometers in the ceramic doors that will
indicate the temperature of the oven. For the CASA models we have an Infra
Red thermometer gun that can be purchased to gauge the oven temperature."

I have an oven thermometer that I bought because I heard that you shouldn't trust the built in oven temp settings when baking. The problem is I have no clue how accurate the oven thermometer is.
On a similar note I have two temp probe thermometers (so I can monitor two joints at the same time). One day out of curiosity I swapped the probes (both are the same model) around on the display units and found that one thermometer reads 10c higher than the other.
The trouble is I now don't know which one is correct, combine that with not knowing how accurate the oven thermometer is, I have decided the best way forward is to just chuck them all in *that* kitchen drawer and just order takeaways.
How does that saying go?. "The man with two clocks is never sure of the correct time"

You could always boil some water and see if it registers around 100C, unless you live at high altitude this should be accurate enough! On a similar note I have two temp probe thermometers (so I can monitor two joints at the same time). Bought a Kitchen Craft one and it's barely lasted a fortnight. Bugger.
