Wine with Curry ?

A group of us are going to friends tomorrow for a Curry, and I have been asked to organise Wine and Beer. The Beer is easy ( Kingfisher, Cobra etc ) however I'm struggling a bit with the Wine - any recomendations would be very welcome.

I always drink Red with a curry, something robust such as a strong Rioja, or Primitivo perhaps.

You'll be wanting something really big and bold to have half a chance of standing up to the curry. My suggestion for a red would be a chateux musar from lebanon. It's readily available in places like Majestic.

I'd go for a New World riesling or torrontes.

I would go with a white either a Riesling or Gewürztraminer would be good,

Chilean Wines are currently promoting themselves as THE wine to drink with curry. The Carmenere grape has strong, spicy flavour, good to match with spicy food apparently. I haven't tried a carmenere with curry, but it does have a tingly, chocolaty finish, so might work well with rich, highly flavoured dishes.

How about Indian wine?

I've just picked up a bottle of Indian viogner from Waitrose to go with my curry this evening, and a quick taste suggests it would work very well.

Lovely floral aromas and not too strong at 12.5% ABV. A nice acidity too, to cut through any greasiness.

As said by many, a chilled, very slightly sweet wine works brilliantly with curry. Don't spend a fortune as you're not going to taste an awful lot over and above the curry itself.

Plotloss (and others) have the right steer on this...

Traminer is great with Thai and Vietamese, and perfumed dishes like Biriyani. But not convinced it works with rich meaty things like Bhuna.

As a left field choice for that, maybe sparking Shiraz.

Interested to hear about the Indian wine. My experiences haven't been great thus far !

I'd agree - I love Gewutz but wouldn't put it up against a typical Indian curry.

There is one chap who advocates (sells) a range a lightly sparkling wines: www.wineforspice.com but TBH, in spite of liking wine a great deal, I've never felt it necessary to have anything other than beer or tea.
