I came across this restaurant review:

http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/mumbai-indian-buffet-ips...

'The only slightly intimidating thing about them was the fact that they will charge you - by the pound - for any leftovers on your plate. But I kind of liked that because it dissuades wasteful portions and means you can take some home with you if you want.'

No mention of it on their website though: www.mumbaiipswich.co.uk/index.html

Has anyone come across this phenomenon before?

There's a Chinese 'all you can eat' in Reading which claims the same thing. As long as you don't take the piss they turn a blind eye to some leftovers on your plate!

I have been to many a buffet where they will charge you for wasted food. I have never seen it in action though and if deters some of societies more ignorant elements from taking the piss then I am all for it.

On reflection this is a good idea. Transposed to my business I could charge people once for taking and providing their wedding photographs, and then charge them again for any they don't use. Weird.

(it does make sense for the 'all you can eat' idea though, as there will be comedians who pile their plate three feet high and leave half of it)(but then why make the offer?)

The offer is "All you can eat", not "All you can put on a plate" wink

I can't bear to leave uneaten food on my plate. I'll undo the top button of my trousers (and the zip too, if required) just to make sure I clear my plate.

It's all very well charging for leftover food but half the dishes they serve in 'all you can eat' restaurants are inedible rubbish (which you only find out once you sit down and attempt to eat it). That and you often get back to your seat to find that the food's cold!

I'm not saying this is the case in all of these restaurants but by their very nature they tend to cater for the less affluent and as such they often churn out food of debatable quality that many people wouldn't eat!

Which is fine, as long as you remember to stop eating before you get to the sausage and meatballs...

I'd bet what isn't eaten is sneakily recombined with what's on the buffet too... hurl

Not quite the same though is it? Photos they don't use won't be taken by other wedding parties.

I've seen such things claimed in a few places, but have never had anybody try and enforce it.

But then I tend to make an effort to finish what I've taken and will generally only leave stuff if it's not nice.

The review linked doesn't seem very accurate though. She says this is the only UK place she has had real paneer and everywhere else uses mozzarella cheese, which is quite frankly bks!
