So I'm off for an unexpected trip there next week. First time to Texas, only been to East or West coast before.

On the list to try locally - steak, tex mex, ribs.

What other must haves ?

Any recommendations for places to go/avoid.

Also wonder if the local beer will be p*ss or if they have good microbreweries.

Ok a bit of a trek out but you must try Coopers BBQ

http://www.coopersbbq.com/

It is simply brilliant - you buy your meat, potato salad etc and sit with it at these huge tables and eat it off greased paper. Seriously its brilliant.

Austin is one of the best citys i've been too, if you go for a drink then try the warehouse district, Live music then go to the Continental Club & The Broken Spoke.

You wont want to come back.

If you like Mexican then Chuys is very nice as chains go but the small pokey restaurants downtown are more authentic, cheaper and better.

Was in Houston earlier this year - made it up to Austin twice.

Fantastic place - 6th street is a blast and the breakfast buffet at the Iron Cactus (I think that's what it is called) is worth checking out to sort the inevitable hangover.

Bikini's sports bar is well worth a look too biggrin

Spent the Saturday afternoon lounging at the Hilton's rooftop pool - frozen cocktails and plenty of eye candy.

I didn't encounter too much in the way of microbrewed stuff and spent most of the time drinking Dos Equis or Coors (not the light, the proper one) both of which I love, so I wasn't complaining.

If you want to drink decent beer i can recommend Shiner Bock or Shiner Blonde - a truly great beer rivaling anything from Germany. I did the Shiner brewery tour and it was brilliant.

Blimey this all brings back memories....I have family in Austin and went there a couple of times early 90's. It's a great town and has a really lively music scene and night life....home of SXSW which is the biggest live music festival in the world or something like that.

If there's any particular food etc you want to try let me know and I will ask my cousin for some good local places.

Here's something a bit different to do on a Sunday afternoon.....

http://www.riversportstubes.com/

When I did it we had a tube for the beer cooler...there are worse ways to spend Sunday afternoons.

If you like live Music you should go here

http://www.antones.net/

It's one of the best Blues clubs in the world....it's an Austin institution.

For BBQ stuff this place is really famous but it's about an hour from Austin

http://www.nbsmokehouse.com/

When I go and visit my sister in New York I still get things shipped there from the NB Smokehouse!

They are quite a few micro breweries there but the old Shiner Bock is a really nice beer as mentioned above.

Ah the memories......being an English lad on holiday in Texas was quite some fun biggrin

Oh, man - lots to try, thanks All!

Shiner Bock is definitely going to be sought out. And many of the other places sampled. My hotel is in the centre of town by City Hall so most stuff will be reachable.

The vendor I'm visiting is trying to organise a trip to lake Travis one evening for me as well.

I am going to have to run or swim every morning I think or I'll be 2 sizes larger when I return !

Bit of a bonus since this was supposed to be a training course in London that was cancelled due to lack of numbers and as I've just spent a fortune on their product they were kind enough to fly my to Austin for the course instead. It's tough to be me sometimes smile

The Shiner tour was brilliant, quite a small brewery and the founder from what i gather was German hence why its a real good beer.

The staff get something like 2 or 3 free cups of beer a day and they looked very happy when i saw them working lol.

They had an old bloke there who had retired in his late 60's but then realised he was on his own and all his family were his collegues at the brewery so he asked to go back, he just wobbled round with a brush and doing odd jobs and was part of the furniture. He was wqell into his 80's.

Seriously if you get chance get over to Shiner for the tour, its worth an afternoon out.

Was pretty much led around by the locals so didn't get much of a chance to hit the places you mentioned. I did, however go out on a speedboat on Lake Austin and go for a dip outside Michael Dells house (with it's own AMerican football pitch in the back garden!)

Went to state line BBQ as it was close to where their offices were. Was damn good. Also the Ginger Man, great beer bar ! 100s of brews on tap. Shiner Bock included. Drank so much there I bought a t shirt smile

Had mahooosive steak at Eddie Vs. Didn't get a chance to catch the music scene, but I WILL be finding an excuse to go back.

You guys were right - great city, great vibe.

Foookin hot though. Hit about 40 degrees every day and managed to be above 35 when leaving a bar or restaurant at 11 - which is a bizarre feeling !

I did manage to be very English and go running twice in it though smile
