Which filter coffee machine?
Discussion
Ceramic filter cone + paper. £6.95 from Amazon, and make it fresh each time.
I've tried the output from various filter machines and am convinced these impart a slightly stale taste to the coffee from the permanent filter (nigh-on impossible to clean).
If you're set on a 'machine', try and find one which uses paper filters.

Having sent the weekend traipsing around various shopping centres/malls I'm still undecided.
I think I'd like to try MCs suggestion. The one linked to is a '1x2', which I think probably means it's for two cups which I'm guessing is a mugful so exactly what I'm looking for.
I can't find any papers/filters that size though. Am I right to assume the size 4 will be fine, just too tall?

Whoops - didn't realise that was the 1 x 2. The larger papers will fit the smaller cone - they just need to be folded to size. Personally I'd get the 1 x 4 for £9.99 as you'll get two decent mugfuls out of that. (Other people will want one.) I think I'd like to try MCs suggestion. The trick with using the cone is to put the coffee in, moisten it with boiling water and allow 15-20 seconds for the grounds to swell. Top up, and give it a swirl / stir so that the coffee brews fully, and doesn't end up on the sides of the filter rather than in the bottom where you want it.
A great little gadget this, and it will last you for years. I'm still using one that belonged to my parents.
If you ever decide you want to make more or prefer to have a jug, check out Chemex filter pots - great bits of kit and nothing really to go wrong.
I use a different approach to MC when it comes to cone filters:
1) Rinse the filter paper with hot water before use to get rid of any chlorine taste
2) Add coffee
3) Add small amount of water to allow grounds to swell
4) Top up to about half way but DO NOT STIR
5) Keep topping up until for about 3 mins (1 minute to go on the brew)
This leaves a cone of ground coffee around the filter, which according to advice originally on CoffeeGeek (and I think with the Chemex instructions), is what you need to to deliver the goods with this type of kit.

Yep, just about perfectly. QUESTION: Does the two cup fill the mug ?
1. Run a little hot water through filter to dampen it.
2. Discard water.
3. Pop 3 teaspoons/1 dessert spoon of ground coffee in filter.
4. A splash of hot water to create a little 'coffee-mud'.
5. Once the 'mud' has set (it slows the flow), slowly fill the filter.
6. Wait a few moments.
7. Enjoy.
8. Bin the filter & coffee grounds.
9. Rinse cone.
Two great advantages:
1. No mess or anything fiddly to clean, like a cafetierre.
2. Excellent coffee with no crap at the bottom of the cup.
I'm a real convert, and about six others in the building and their families have all bought them.
