Swedish turnip or simply turnip as the Scots and most cornish call it is the only accepted choice.
Pretty sure Scots call 'em "neeps"...
Well having spent 3 years up there ensconced with a native in a past life I think I know! ...they don't go into the brand farm shop and ask for a neep. Although tbf Edinburgh folk and haddingtonshireites are a wee bit more effected than the rest, at least those in my circles. Maybe in Tranent or Prestonpans.

hehe
Calm down mate!! On reflection, I should have written "many" Scots call 'em "neeps", as I was recalling a conversation with a friend of mine (RIP) who had to clarify wtf he was talking about on the subject. I wrote that some Scots say "neeps" in response to, "...as the Scots and most Cornish call it...". Maybe you should have written, "...as most Scots and Cornish call it...", if you were aware of the word, for clarity.

I wrote "pretty sure" in order that someone could clarify, as I am quite happy to be corrected. Thank you for correcting me so pleasantly and for the hehe to roundly finish off such an important point. I am staggered, as I did not know that you had taken such a tremendous amount of time and effort - by speaking to every Scot - in order to establish whether everyone did or did not say "neeps". That is truly a great effort and my apologies for impinging on your chosen subject. Well, your day did finally come, and I stand corrected..., sort of. wink
Perhaps it's me but there's a brightly colored feather talking bird fluttering around somewhere.

Not sure what your getting your kickers in a twist over it was perfectly polite!

The snigger was my final line about the places I mention, but I guess only a local would get that. Apols.

Finally tried a Lucy bakes (hayle) the other day after strong recommendations on CO...never again. Horribly overthick doughy pastry and a stodgy fillingin both thr cornish and Chese and onion.. Perhaps worth another go as we all know sometimes even the nest pasties have an off day, has been sitting too long etc and infair tonjudge on one but don't fancy popping in again.

Just checked - flaky pastry nono for me - has to be shortcrust
Shortcrust is inferior to a nice flakey pastry.

It's allowed (according to the regs) but it's no way 'traditional' wink

I don't care if it's traditional or not. Traditional pasties are great but there are many non traditional Cornish pasties that are 'better' biggrin

There’s nothing like a proper, home-made traditional Cornish pasty.

My friend used to constantly tell me how his mums home made traditional pasties were unbeaten and the best in Cornwall. Finally got to try one, looked absolutely amazing but turned out to be a bit boring and bland taste wise - not enough seasoning, didn't dare tell her and just said it was great - a Prima would of trounced it in a taste competition biggrin

That’s been my general experiences with other people’s home made ones, I think it’s a bit like a Sunday roast, you love your mums and the one you make yourself, then you visit someone else and they serve you a plate of stuff that makes you go ‘WTF is this?!’ silly

Here’s my entry for the World pasty championships

Plenty of pepper (and salt) means it definitely isn’t bland smile

If I revealed that you could potentially google the results and find out my identity.

As much as I’m a Philps man, I had a superb pasty from Mr Scorse in St Mawes the other day. Absolutely first class!

Any idea why they canned the competition? It seems a shame not to keep promoting and pushing something as distinctive and unique to the county.

Yes, it was a shame. I think there was a not insignificant cost in putting on the competition and not enough sponsors to help support it.
Most recently they had some sort of event to coincide with St Piran’s day which involved pasty making but not an actual competition.
