Chinooks (I think) Over Manchester

This has just flown over my house:




I saw two at Ladybower Reservoir the other week. I was stood at the butty van and they just popped up from behind the trees, tilted forward and got out of there pretty quickly.

I have heard other people saying they have seen a lot of them in the area. We don't often see military aircraft this way and I am a little curious what they are up to. A quick look on Wikipedia says three RAF squadrons operate Chinooks, all out of RAF Odiham in Hampshire. Do you think they are planning a raid on the big house up the road with the 18' fence?

I live about 8 miles from Odiham so they are almost a daily sight around here.

We had a Royal Navy Lynx fly over this morning and two Apaches flew over on Saturday.

Bizarrely while you were answering a mate texted to say he'd seen a Chinook from Werneth Low a couple of hours ago.

Just pure guesswork here, but I wonder if it might be to do with the ongoing moorland fires - isn't there one near Bolton somewhere?

I have a love/hate thing with military aircraft, I love seeing them but always want to know what's going on.

The only military planes I'm used to seeing are Nimrods into Woodford but that's been laid to rest now.

There were two Chinooks over Sheffield today, one of which landed in Pitsmoor. Brave crew.

I'm glad you've said that as I see Chinooks quite often, but saw a few Apaches and wasn't sure if they actually were or not.. So I assume they were

Yep lots of Helos flying up and down the Derwent Valley the past couple of weeks but then again thats not unusual especially given the good weather.
