Then and now-Royal flypast

The wedding gets a grand total of 7 aircraft.

When we still had an airforce- the Royal Coronation review gathered 300 on the gound and a flypast of 650 (yes 650) aircraft.

The 1953 review was something else. It's amazing how much they squeezed into a realtively small RAF airbase (Odiham).

To be fair, the planes were a lot cheaper back then, and we still had a fair bit of Empire to suppress.

They are Canadian built Sabres but they are RAF aircraft.

I didn't realise we ran Sabres. That means -gasp- that Wikipedia is WRONG!

Now that I can see the film, the narrator says that they are Canadian Air Force aircraft - but the RAF did operate Canadair Sabres. They operated them as a stop-gap because of delays to the two fighters that were on order, the Hawker Hunter and the Supermarine Swift.

As an aside, Airfix have just released a 1/72 kit of the Canadair Sabre

To be fair, that was a coronation, this is a wedding, different kettle of fish. A better comparison would be back in the 80's with Charles and Diana. What did they get?

Can you imagine the reaction if we had sent 650 aircraft to the wedding? I'm not sure even you believe that it would go down well.

That's the first time I've seen footage of a prototype Vulcan (straight leading edges) in action.

Sadly, not exercised that day for whatever reason. As well as the crew onboard, three people in the control hut were also killed when the aircarft crashed into it.
