The bit that caught my attention was, aren't the pilots breaking some sort of regulation by landing if they get not response from ATC, or is it just sloppy reporting?

I hear that these controllers were not even allowed to go to the toilet while on shift. I think it's quite right that the FAA boss has quit.

In theory yes. In practice I'm sure they couldn't wait around all night!

I guess there's a emergency procedure for what to do in this situation, which is probably "don't park on top of another plane".

There are 'loss of comms' procedures which vary between countries and even different airfields in the UK. I'm sure they'd be nice to follow if you had lots of fuel, however...

In theory yes. In practice I'm sure they couldn't wait around all night!

Reminds me when I was flying single engined Pipers over in the US a few years back. On final approach I'd not received landing clearance, so I went down about 1000' (of a 6000' runway) about 10' off the ground. Finally got "xxx cleared to land - and thanks for waiting".
