The lunar surface cameras werev modified with essentially no viewfinders. All the astronauts had to do was point the camera in the direction they wanted to shoot. They used a fairly wide angle setting so that they were pretty sure of getting what they wanted in shoot. Smaller SLRs were used when in the spacecraft as they were less bulky.

They may use Nikons now - but they haven't "always" used them.
