this should warm your cockles... i took the photo mid-atlantic a few weeks back whilst sailing on the ARC... unusually for the latitude we were beating hard on the wind (east to west) rather than having a tradewind blowing up our chuff.
in the next day or so, i'll post up a few more ARC pics to get you all in the mood for the 2011 season.

Very Good..I am told there was a big hole after the start and a lot of wind to the North..I delivered the grey Oyster 575 "Endless One" to Las Palmas with good friends of mine who did the ARC but I was to busy to go.
Other friends on "Gwawr" Jeanneau 52 went North and had rough ride and had to go to Verdes for repairs.
I am guessing though St.Lucia was its usual drunken fun and games....Mmmm miss my other home especially at this time of the year in the cold dark miserable U.K.

It was an interesting trip by all accounts. There was plenty of wind for those who went north or took the rhum line, but we didn't much fancy 30+ knots on the nose. We hugged to coast of Africa and went south, hanging a right about 50 miles north of the Verdes. We pushed hard into wind until about midway across and then got some good 30 knot trades right up the rump. Our subscription weather-routing software was an absolute God-send. Most of the fleet didn't have it and only had 2-3 day forecasts, which persuaded them to head south past the Verdes to pick up trades which then completely disappeared. We were 9th boat in to use zero engine hours. 3rd in class too (we were racing in RORC invitational class). I think the last boat across the line only came in a couple of days back!... the motor south to find these non-existant trades pretty much knackered most peoples fuel supplies.
St.Lucia was okay... could have been better if it wasn't for the guy getting machete'd to death outside the marina on the friday night.

Nice photos. Getting hauled up by the reefing cringle is just showing off though.

It's not too late to learn to sail. One of the good things about it is that it's pretty accessible to anyone who is reasonably fit. Try heading to your nearest sailing club and ask if you can put stick a notice on their board to the effect that you are looking to learn and are willing to crew.Nick_F said:

Good pic of Pigeon Island...my eveing jogging spot for a number of years, sometime ago. I did have a interesting encounter up there one night whilst with somebody else. Things do go bump in the night.....its not just when rummed up.
