Many years ago when I was still living at home a Spitfire was scheduled to fly over head during a family BBQ (The parents lived less than a mile from the A1m) It was a bit over cast.

A private airplane flew past to which my dad commented "there goes the Spit"

My comment without even looking was "nope not even close!"

About 10mins later the earth shook as a Spitfire went past and by christ did it sound good!

Think I saw that too... flying the other way!

Reminds me of back when Concorde was out of service, company I worked for had a golf tournament, just as we were breaking for lunch Concorde went over on a test flight... The boss said " you have no idea how many strings I had to pull to arrange that!"

(Our company logo was the Concorde)

That's even more embarassing than confusing a Spitfire with a P-47 (they both have elliptical wings)...

In fairness to the old man he couldn't see it, only hear it.

The P47 it was a better ground attack platform than pretty much anything with a liquid cooled engine. One bullet in the radiator could bring down a P/F 51 but you could shoot the cylinders off the radial engine in a P47 and it would still fly.

I like the story about the US Navy officer who was asked why they didn't favour liquid cooled aircraft. "We don't have air cooled submarines."

The P-47 wasn't designed for the ground attack role but ended up doing it once the P-51 came along. When complimented about the superior diving abilities of the P-47, Don Blakeslee, a Spitfire advocate, replied 'By god it ought to dive, for it certainly won't climb!'

I can't remember the exact quote but back in the 50s and 60s it was a wildly held belief that if a runaway was built all the way around the equator then Republic would build an aircraft that would need it all to take off.

Apparently the Spitfire was at the Watercress Line War get together on Saturday, spotted by a lady that works for me
