The first complete block has been transferred to Rosyth for mating with it's adjacent blocks.

My first thought when I opend the link was "Aww, I thought it was going to be a bigger chunk", but then I noticed the people standing on the deck near it and it is rather big smile

The last picture in the series has the caption "The new ships will be assembled in the Number One Dock at Rosyth shipyard".

Does this mean that work to assemble the modules for PoW can only start once QE has been assembled and launched ?

The "Main Blocks" are assembled on Rosyth, and put together, the area's producing the sub-blocks, like the bow shown, can now get on with building the parts for PoW (if it's scheduled), once QE is launched then they can assemble the rest, it won't take long to put it all together once they're built.

I'm not involved in the build strategy or anything, I'm a Battlespace Architect for the Mission Systems. I posted the image because I'm proud to be involved and I know some of the PH'ers are interested in how things are progressing with these ships.

Del;
I hope they got the measurements right too, could do without more "trip hazards" LOL wink

Glad of the post - It's about time we had something approximating a real carrier again. Wonder how much is being spent on the fixtures on the barge to secure each section smile

The Naval Arc. that sits behind me in here is in charge of the Govan end of the build strategy.

Some of the 3D animations i've seen of them shifting LB03 and LB04 about the yard, and onto the barges is crazy. It's really going to be something worth seeing when they actually load them onto the barges
Tell me about it, I'd love to try and rangle a meeting up there when a big move is taking place!! I'll definitely try and witness the Islands being put on the barges (when ever that may be).

Everytime I see something which highlights the size of these ships I'm blown away!!

may or may not be involved in this....

Weighing the units, Site Moves on MultiWheels, and then loadout / load-ins to the final assembly areas......

'I could tell you but.....'

wink
Damn it, maybe I shouldn't have elaborated on what I do! LOL

It's going to be very impressive in your position watching these grow!

Its a shame I'm moving on in a couple of months as my office has a fantastic view of Dock 1 and I would have liked to have seen the assembly.

Historically, Queen Elizabeth should be a battleship... a carrier really needs to be Ark Royal, Furious, Glorious, Eagle etc.

But I'm pleased we've been able to stump up (OK borrow) the readies to have a new carrier.

Once the sections are dlivered to Rosyth, how are they transferred into the dry dock and moved around?

Looking at the aerial photo (and assuming that the dry dock is the big one to the left of the air craft carrier), I don't see any gantry cranes or similar that could lift 400Te.

The larger blocks are being floated into position, and a 'Goliath' crane is being installed to lift the upper units on.

Apparently it's to be around 90m tall, so around 3 times taller than the curent tallest building on site.

Does the option to change the design to include catapult and arrestor gear still exist if F-35B gets cancelled ? Is there a point in the build that this decision needs to be taken by - or can they be retrofitted after the ships are completed ?

It will be expensive but it can be done at any stage, the spaces for the machinery required etc has been identified and designed already and the design validated by people "in the know". The design work was done for steam though as EMALS is still not quite there yet as far as capability goes.

Why is it every time I hear about EMALS for the carriers I imagine during flight Ops all the bridge computer/tv screens distorting 'bowside' as a plane is launched hehe
(I do realise that TFT don't suffer this problem as badly as CTR but still....)

Its not the TV screens on the Bridge you need to worry about its the sensitivity of the aircraft sensors and some of the intended weapons fits to an EMP.

But that would require common sense and forward planning...
