Just wondering what will give me the most satisfaction.
A new RIB boat(RIBCRAFT, HUMBER) or a used Aston Martin V8.
Costs will be almost the same.

Without experience of boat ownership (or AM ownership) rumour has it that boats eat up even more money than cars (but not as much as women). Also its a lot more effort to get to somewhere to play with the boat.....not that I wouldn't be tempted smile

The Aston. I've drive a fair amount of RIB's and there's only so much fun can be had with one. It's fun blasting around for a while, but you get bored after a while. On a given day, the sea is generally the same mile after mile. The same cannot be said of a good road. Boats are also a money pit which you won't use as often as you think you will.

I sell boats, teach, skipper, whatever........
Buy the Aston get a old Osca India V8 Vantage on Carbs, pref X pack, you will get much more use out of it given the last summers we have had. The RIB will be more of a faf , they exposed boats and ok if you want to be on mission all the time.(I use one most days in the summer)
Oh !, you will also probably make money on the Vantage if you buy right !!!!.

Don't go for the footballers choice of Aston......

Buy both... 2nd hand.

Our dive club just bought a '95 Humber Assault RIB, Very easy to tow, launch and use, is set up as dive boat so top wack is 28knots but setup for "fun" could be much faster, cost- £3K!!!! (including trailer, engine and electrics! Ebay is your friend :-)

That leaves plenty of change for a car I think.

RIB's are boats with a purpose- rescue, diving, workboats etc- they are stable and safe stationary and almost as quick as more focussed speed boats if setup right. But is that what you want? I see alot of RIB owners who might have been better off with a bow-rider or wakeboard boat (perfect for the Max power generation)

For the number of times that you are likely to use a boat, compared to the car, hire the boat for the odd day here & there & buy the car

Depends where you'll keep the RIB? Do you have to trailer it everywhere? Does it have a permanent mooring? Do you need a tender to get to the mooring? We have a house with an attached mooring (which is pretty much as convenient as it gets), yet we still didn't use our boat as much as we should have.

If we'd have had to trailer the boat places, unload on slipways, go out to the mooring on a tender, etc, then I don't think we'd have ever bothered to use it. Really consider how often you'll get the chance to use the RIB compared to how often you'll use the Aston...

Haven't you heard the saying " IF IT FLYS....FLOATS... OR F@@@S.... rent it by the hour ............ in all honesty RIB's are a blast even having owned a Cranchi 50' I really enjoy renting an 8m RIB when I'm in the med.. You will however need a powerboat licence, a day should get you through the ICC (international certificate of competance) and the basic one will allow you to drive anything power upto 10m... You'll find centres on the RYA website

I have already A YOTA (Lotus Exige S2) and a Caterham R400.... The AM V8 is the intended and obvious upgrade smile
I do like the older V8's as well. The Oscar Indy was one of the first AM's I saw as a child (in Zwitserland).

The rib will be used for scouting my kids during dingy sailing (Optimists). If I buy a Sailboat it will be a Dragon .... At the moment prices are low.

I have my SRC (marine radio) and and powerboat level 2 certificate.

I am looking now at XS- Ribs, Humber and Ribcraft. I am planning now test drives. As I have not yet driven Astons I think I will try to get behind the wheel as well.

If you want something for following the kids when sailing in the Opi you want less than 6.0m ( We have 6.0 and 4.9). I spend most days teaching sailing from Rib's, the 6.0m is to big and awkward / cumbersome, around dinghies and high freeboard as well for leaning into boats, more difficult launching and shoreline work, if it beaches its stuck where as the 490 you push back in.I am also Powerboat Instructor and do own boat tution, plus x superyacht skipper so my daily transport was RIB.

Best RIB for the money size and incredible performance is the Valiant DR490 with commercial grade tubes. Its more capable than most 6.0m's and bigger. Its easy to live with, you should be able to get new one plus and engine and trailer for 12k. They also do bigger DR's.
Read what the RNLI had to say about !.
Our's has had unbelievable punishment as we beach launch in some interest seas everyday and has been faultless. It has backed up the lifeboat and probably done twice as many rescues as the local lifeboat in high wind and wind over tide situations, standing sea's etc.
Don't go for the Mercury Engine package though, better Honda , Yam, Suzuki, Evinrude ETEC.

Dragon's, got a few here now in Abersoch, there has been some good deals as you say.
If the kid's are just starting, get them in a Laser funboat first they are great confidence builders as they can spend time learning to steer straight and understand wind direction/ 5 Essentials without spend most of there time worrying about going for a swim or turning tutle with them under it.....Also you can't crack your head on the boom.

Lovely collection of cars.

Don't forget Ribtec, Avon and Zodiac - shameless plug! I sell RIB's, let me know if you would like any help or advice, or a ride out on one. What size are you looking for? Where are you based?

And me to.......shameless plug......;)
I did work to Ribtec years ago, I was doing demo's in 6.5m at Southampton back in 2000 when those people fell out of another companies RIB and got chopped and killed....Not nice.
Have to say I like some of the Ribtec's, there are a lot of old Camel Trophy ones up here.Have to say though our Avon 6m is poor.

I like RIB's which sit the stern tubes in the water a rest (Given Engine Size/Weight). Yes they are slightly slower but don't tend to chine walk at speed and worse still when trimmed up. I now quite a few of the later as I am sure you do....

Oh right. We've just become the UK distributor for Ribtec so we're looking for dealers. We are also a very big Avon and Zodiac dealer. I have the new Avon 580 with a Yamaha F150 myself. I do like the look of the Ribtec 655, we currently have one as a demo boat.

Assuming that fuel for Boats in the UK is as expensive as fuel for cars...

You should STILL buy the Aston. I owned a boat and found the running costs to be outrageous, and that's when I lived in Florida and was able to use it roughly 11 months out of the year.

In Britain? Ha! Screw that.
