Aircraft Museums near London ?

Right, i live in north London and fancy walking round a few WWI/II aircraft plus anything else that fly's (or used to) and is interesting.....

Are there any decent places/museums that people can recommend for a day out?

Many thanks

Maybe Brooklands, get the best of both worlds there and you could even slot in MB World too.

I am going there on saturday with my daughter (she is 3.5 and loves AIRPLANES!!!). Have been there in the last 6 months, and it is a good day out. I think it is free to get in as well.

As been said...

RAF Museum, Hendon is where you need to go.

Imperial War Museum at Duxford in Cambs would be next on the list, as in addition to the large static collection on display, there also the UK's largest collection of airworthy WW2 aircraft there, so if you plan that visit for the springtime, you might get to see something fly as they come out of winter maintainance.

The Concorde at Brooklands is G-BBDG. This machine never flew with British Airways - although it did fly in BA colours as part of the promotional tours undertaken in 1973/74.

She's the only Concorde in the original BA colour scheme.

dont forget they rape you for the 'concorde experience' you pay to get in and then its £5+ to just go onboard the concorde.

Duxford also have a concorde - and there is not extra charge for going onboard.

They also have a nice SR71 Blackbird you can walk up and touch smile

The good thing about Brooklands though is that it's hands on (or bum in). I went there a few months ago when I had my Merc serviced at MB World and I thought I'd have a look around Brooklands whilst MB did the work. It was a weekday and quiet.

So I'm idly wandering around one of the Hangars looking at one of the development versions of the Harrier. An old bloke with a handlebar moustache wanders up and says "Do you want to sit in it?'. Yes I said. Cue 10 minutes of poking and prodding around the cockpit. How pilots eject from those things with their knees intact I don't know.

More wandering around. Sitting in the left hand seat of the Sultan of Oman's? private VC10, ditto Viscount, with various ex-pilots and flight engineers explaining what the various twiddly bits do. If anyone needs the engine start procedures for a VC10 explained to them, I'm your man!

'I'm having a whale of a time here I thought'. Then in the car sheds, they had a simulator rigged up to one of Mika Hakkinen's McLarens (or at least a show car). Cue, 'Do you want to sit in it?'. Old fat man struggles to get into a 2000 and something F1 car, couple of laps round the track on the simulator, and old fat man struggles to get out of said tub.

Anyway. Brooklands. Well worth the visit. probably best to avoid the weekends though if you want to sit in things.

When I went the Concorde was being refurbished so no one could go onboard. The other planes as mentioned were all open, I too sat in the harrier and decided that sitting there, stationary was scary enough let alone flying the thing!! I didnt see the simulator though, oh well I'll just have to go back!!

Last time I was there they had two "Harrier" type aircraft on display. They had one of the early test aircraft, a Hawker Siddeley P1127 and they had G-VTOL, which was the two seat Harrier T52 demonstrator. I saw it fly at the 1978 Farnborough Air Show - with Raymond Baxter commentating from the rear seat.
