My current flat is a bit of a sthole, so looking around for alternatives, and one idea I quite like is living on a boat, e.g. http://www.riverhomes.co.uk/site/property-details/...

Anyone have stories to tell?

Posting this from my floating home. Bricks n' mortar - NEVER again (aside from a VERY substantial Lottery win, which would perhaps tempt me into spending stupid money on bricks and a "flusher"... ABROAD!)

Seriously, go have a look and chat to people who've done it. It's not for everyone, but I can honestly say it's the best thing I've ever done. It's a different world, and the people who live afloat are as diverse as the craft in which they live. Having said that, they do have one thing in common. They enjoy life!

Go for it! PM me if you want any more info.

Lived on a sailboat for three years mainly in the Caribbean with my family, bloody fantastic experience. Mind you nearly three years of sun and 70/80 degrees helps a lot. The other plus point is you have to get rid of most of your st and travel light. biggrin

£450 seems steep even for that location. try apolloduck.co.uk for more listings, £600 a mth seems the be the norm/reasonable for london.

its my aim to have a liveaboard at some point, but 80ftx20ft-ish as per some of the ones in the netherlands. a narrow boat would be far too claustrophobic for me and even a wide beam uk barge would be small.

a friend of mine lived on an ex-mauritania lifeboat for 18mths in bristol. my bedroom was bigger than his entire 'house'.

I lived on a narrowboat and now my wife and I are restoring a British Barge to do the same. I love it, but its not for everyone and its not as straightforward as living in a house. Parking for my car has always been part of the factors in finding mooring locations, but its possible.
