60163 Tornado completed the London-Edinburgh run today - filmed for the new series of Top Gear! Jeremy Clarkson was "driving" Tornado (or at least on the footplate); Hammond was racing him on a Vincent bike and James May was in a Jag.

Some footage on Youtube:

It should make terrific viewing as part of the next series, starting towards the end of June.

I thought their races had run out of ideas, but this sounds like the dog's danglies. To contradict what it says in the video comments, Clarkson doesn't dislike trains, just public transport. He adores British engineering and POWERRRRR though, and I can't think of a better example than Tornado. It should give Tornado a nice bit of publicity too.

I suspect this is going to be one of those Top Gear episodes that just gets the shivers running down your spine. Excellent, I can't wait!

ETA Sad to see this thread languishing on Boats Trains and Planes, where the majority of GG readers just won't see it.

Thanks for pointing it out in GG. thumbup
Like him or loathe him, Jeremy Clarkson is never short of entertaining new ideas.

From another forum I read JC did actually fire Tornado on the trip (and did well) and 'may' have had his hand on the regulator occasionally as well. Was rather sooty black on arrival at Edinburgh apparently before rushing off to the finish line.

Of course, there's also the moanings of 'my license fee' etc etc, but the train was a paying rail tour full of paying punters who were only told of the relevance of the trip once they were passing Stevenage.

I guess the usual TopGear mocking angle will be that rail technology advances make hardly any difference to the journey time whereas the journey on/in an old bike or car was a challenge and these days is effortless.

I doubt there are many posters who won't know when top gear is on.

Just spotted May and Hammond (with Jag and Vincent) doing some filming around Kings Cross at lunchtime today
