Excellent work by the RN and some pride regained after the embarrassment of the 'battle of the ipod' with the Iranians.

Arrgh, me hearties!

Well done lads! Pity they never used the big-guns for target practice though.

In the ensuing gunfight, two Somali pirates in a Yemeni-registered fishing dhow were killed, and a third pirate, believed to be a Yemeni, suffered injuries and subsequently died. It was the first time the Royal Navy had been engaged in a fatal shoot-out on the high seas in living memory.

By the time the Royal Marines boarded the pirates’ vessel, the enemy had lost the will to fight and surrendered quietly. The Royal Navy described the boarding as “compliant”.

The printed version said 'guns and other “pirate paraphernalia” on board'.

.

Not much of a match for an SA80...

I initially thought it was regarding that ship with the tanks on board. Good work though. I bet those commandos were loving it.

Is WW2 not "in living memory".

Ha, yes, I hadn't thought of the destruction of the Bismarck as a 'fatal shoot-out' hehe

However, wait until it's found that the pirate's families live in England, and sue the MOD for compensation...

Cheeky barstewards, as if the Royal Navy wouldn't spot a Sikorvsky (sp) minceing it about).

Standard procedure for frigates / destroyers (usually frigates) on deployment to carry about 14 Royal Marines for boarding parties etc. Biggest problem for us is having a woosie government who won't give us the rules of engagement to go and take the pirates out. The French, of all people, aren't as bothered by such things (note gallic shrugs all round in the UN) and have already gone into Somalia with their commandos and killed numerous pirates.

Just been reading The Times link and comments.
I am proud that the majority of the replies are from our American Cousins, they see and I see the significance in these actions.
