Sad I know, but would love to know which one it was biggrin Anyone in the know?

Thanks!

If it's 'rather large' it's not one of ours frown

Looks like it could be HMS Illustrious.

Google is normally too out of date to pick them up also you can't read the side!

Hmm, Fleet Support must be getting efficient in their old age. Illustrious was still in dry dock a couple of weeks back, covered in scaffolding and tarpaulins.
Invincible will never see a crew again, well not unless it's the boys from the scrapyard. She's been at Pompey for ages now being robbed for spares for the other two.
There's also a rather large supply boat that'll probably never see active servie again, not since the tug ropes snapped and she bounced off the harbour wall and bent a propshaft. Allegedly wink Good job we're not at war with anyone rolleyes
Anyway, won't be long before cruise ships are parking up in Pompey: most of the navy yard is being demobbed and sold off to White Star... or was it Cunard wink

Partly but unless the next acrap is against a bunch of South American conscripts it's going to be tough. Most military commanders feel happiest if they have 'overwhelming force' before getting stuck in!

But if we are to have a Navy that reflects our current position in the world, Hoseasons might be able to help out. I think we could afford a couple of 4-berth cabin crusers for a week - if we can get a discount...

I was on an aviation enthusiasts holiday in the US back in the early 1980s and James Hoseason was one of the group. He was a very nice chap and I got on really well with him.

Another useless piece of information.

Why should it? Google Earth uses archive images from weeks/months/years ago or do you honestly tell yourslf you're connecting to a live satellite link every time you log on? laugh

It's on google earth/maps. By enabling the wiki and photo layers you're able to identify it.

That "flat top" is the Tor Point ferry.
Care to send the lat/long of said War Canoe so we can see for ourselves?
Googel Earf ain't live but it'd be interesting to see how recent their imagery is. Anyone know how when she dropped anchor?

OKay I've checked the Admiralty website for Illustrious and she's since moved into Portsmouth. Checked google earth - Portsmouth and she's there this morning.

I think it's Invincible which has been semi decomissioned in HMNB Portsmouth.

About 5 years old, at least around here. I can see the previous owners car in the drive of my house, and I moved 3.5 years ago. I can see my old man's car parked where he used to work, and he retired 4.5 years ago. But I can see where they painted a bit of road red in 2002/2003, so it's not any older than that.

I imagine they do rolling updates, and will update the most visited places more often.

Sorry that data is incorrect.
