Does anyone have experience of the above? A friend has two of them, a Seafarer 3 and a Seafarer 5.
The main query is, does it need the PP9 battery fitted to operate or does plugging the battery terminals into the connectors inside the unit when on external power do the trick? I ask because we have tested both units dry with external power with the battery connections fitted to the internal connections to see if they light up without a transponder fitted, did this on a car battery, not on the boat. The 3 lights up, but the 5 does not.
Does anyone have a manual for these old worthies, or even a wiring diagram? I suspect the 5 has a dry joint somewhere, and should work on external power with the battery connectors fitted to the internal terminals, as the 3 seems to do.

Manual says:
"If the instrument (Seafarer 5) is to be powered from the ship's supply, attention is drawn to the fact that the internal battery terminals must remain stowed in the stowage position. The unit will not operate on an external supply unless the battery terminals are in the stowage position."
There's a drawing further on in the manual showing the stowage connections to the right hand side of the battery compartment, it's the two terminals at the top on a 45 deg angle. The lower one is -ve the higer one is +ve, just in case you don't have the male/female origional connectors.
The next two going downwards are for the external supply, Lh is -ve and Rh +ve.
Manual states any supply from 12 to 24/32 v is OK, providing it's not too rough and spikey will do.
If I used mine a bit more I might not spend so much time stuck on the mud watching the tide ebb away while the crew makes pointed comments about the pub being open.
