I'll kick it off...

It's a 1998 Simon Rogers designed Whitbread 27. Effectively a slightly smaller version of a Mount Gay 30 or Mumm 30. The boat is designed with a water-ballast system but we have disconnected this to avoid being hammered on our IRC rating. The boat has proved very successful in her first season with us (last year was our first season) with a top 100 finish in the 2006 RTI and 2nd in the RLymYC IRC 2 summer series.

Unfortunately, we recently lost the rig over the side (annoying as we were on course to win the RLymYC early summer series), but the new rig has been ordered which should now give us a masthead kite... Couple this to a new suit of Sanders Sails and we should do quite well in the Winter series.

Aside from this little 'toy'... I also have approx 1000 yachts offered for sale via my company listings... so name your poison! (p.s. I can get hold of this Wallypower 118 that everyone seems to lust after... euro 17,500,000 or thereabouts if you're interested)

Where do you race it?

We have just picked up a brand new Archambault Grand Surprise that we are racing out of Lymington - pretty quick boat (especially downhill in a breeze, with a 180sqm A sail....)

When we have actually have a rig... We race from the Royal Lym... The yacht is kept at Berthon (I run Berthon's Motor Yacht Brokerage Division)... Her name is "Five Thirtyone PM"...

I'm sure I've seen your boat flying around... does she have a coloured hull?

White hull with "Flying Boat" down the side - it is kept just past the ferry terminal. Unfortunately, it is not my boat (belongs to a member of the RLYC), but I have been racing with him for about 10 years. The last boat was a Dehler 40 with a dark blue hull.....

I can't quite guage the scale in the photo so that could be either a Westerly Oceanranger 38 or Oceanlord 41... either way, it looks very nicely presented and I would guess she is of +/-1992 vintage?

Sold a fair few of those in my time as along with the later Ocean 43's & 49's and the odd Oceanmaster 48. They make cracking pocket bluewater yachts by all accounts.

Nice boat.... and sat in Ocean Village to boot by the looks of things

Yea's she is in OVM, she is OR80 launched 4th July 97, I think westerly only made three more after her. Plan is to do the ARC at some point, just need to upgrade the original instruments, sort out better batteries smart charger, alternator, downwind kit, radar, EPIRB, Liferaft, etc etc.

Slowly and surely I will get there, always said the next transatlantic I do will be on my own boat.

Toxic who you selling for know? Do you know Dave Freeman?

I run the motor yacht side of things at Berthon... Have been doing so since Jan, but have been with Berthon for about 7yrs, previously specialising in bluewater sailing yachts.

Was out in Las Palmas for the beginning of the ARC last year as we are the corporate sponsors for the event. Lots of Berthon-bought entries in there including one of two Westerlys!

Dave Freeman..... rings a definite bell somewhere.

Yea, they are solid boats but need a bit of wind to get going, Dave Freeman comissioned her for us and now runs an electronic place at Hamble Pt. There three chaps doing the Azores and Back race this year in one, well they will have finished by now. If my numbers come up I am looking to get a 65ft swan or maybe an old Volvo 60 to dick around in with some friends! You sold any of those Challenge boats yet or are they rotting on the hard in Lymington still!

Yep.. Certainly needs a bit more kicker but in my defence that was a Saturday afternoon. I'd just dropped the boat in the water and really couldn't be arsed about how it all looked.

But that blue boat is a ing evil bitch from hell. When she was built most 14 sailors considered her a little too radical and unstable. No mistake there. She'll do all manner of amazing antics to flush you into the water. The best one she did so far was to loose all grip at the stern and corkscrew around the bow. Despite the fact that I was planing at the time and the bow was well out of the water. Get it right on the other hand and she flies.

I'm sure we can help you there!

Pretty much all of the Volvo 60's have passed through the Berthon books via our racing yacht department... We usually get through a couple each season. We currently have Merit & Assa Abbloy I listed for sale.

Swans are our forte (we have the Nautor agency for Spain & Portgual)... We've had a few 57's, 65's & 651's through Lymington over the past season or two. We currently have 75 Swans listed of different types and sizes.

As for Challenge Boats... you'll have to get in there very quickly... all the 67's are gone and most of the 72's have also now found buyers. There is no shortage of interest and offers come in pretty much on a daily basis... The difficulty is in sorting out the chaff from the wheat and considering the offers most likely to progress to a sale.

We could also place a 1997 Westerly Oceanranger 38 very easily indeed!... We've fired our way through a fair number of the Westerly/Trintella generation boats over the past couple of seasons. We even have a 'Trintella Ocean 43' here in the yard for sale (effective a Westerly Ocean 43 built at Trintella).

...If you ever need any help, you know where I am!

Yea but aren't yacht broker fees circa 10% of sale cost? I reckon see is probably worth 90-95k at the moment!

I have sailed on both Tokio W60 and Spirt V60, you would need to be getting a large container of sails to make purchase a viable "budget" consideration. What are the W60's going for 150-200k?

I won't go into the ins & outs of brokerage fees on here, but I would always be delighted to have a chat with you about what you tend to physically get for your various rates of commission.

Re. Volvo 60's... you do usually get a container full of sails and often a spare mast or two. Assa Abbloy I is offered at Euro 350,000+VAT and comes with stacks of sails and spares. Merit is much older (1997 as opposed to 2001) is offered at Euro 220,000 complete with a full inventory of spares.

Challenge 72's come out at £395,000+VAT... we can also supply spares packages etc.

I used Ancasta to sell a Fairline Targa 27 for me a few years ago & was very disappointed with the service. IIRC, c. 7% commission & I had to chase them every week, as well as organise & do the demo myself....
