I'm on my summer holidays until September and am a keen dinghy racer - sailed in 6 national championships in the last 7 years and i'm keen to do some big boat sailing

I'm wondering if anyone is after a crew on their yacht for either delivery runs (preferably somewhere warm wink) or even for offshore racing at any time, I don't have a lot of big boat experience but i'm pretty strong and have done a bit, i'm in Devon, so Plymouth and Southampton aren't too far away.

How heavy are you? Any good at trapezing?

About 18 stone (and falling) and 6ft 2, normally helm and get small crews to even the weight balance out and still be competitive in class.

Did a lot of trapezing on cats, Dart 18 and Hurricane 5.9 in recent years and a few times on a Cherub. (though not as stupid a cherub as the ones in the other thread!)

North Wales is a helluva long way to go though for a sail, what class do you sail?

Nic,

Where are you based & do you have much experience in big boats? I know of quite a competitive Beneteau 32.7 that is sometimes looking for good crew (they are based in Lymington)

Schmalex, I live in Exeter at the moment so probably about 1.5 hours to Lymington, moving back to Hertfordshire again soon so probably the same amount of time away.

Had a little experience in bigger boats, sailed an ISIS 21 a few times match racing and a few other cruisers, Hawk 20, and a J24 never raced properly in a big'un though.

Racing as yacht crew is a lot different from dinghy racing. For a start you will get shouted at lots, and you have a specific job / jobs, choose from (from the pointy bit back):

Bowman - runs the foredeck, sorts out headsails
Mastman - hoists sails, helps with spinny pole
Pit - runs the clutches, halyards, guys
Nav - tell the helm where to go
Genoa trimmer - looks after the foresail
Main trimmer - looks after the mainsail
Spinny trimmer - looks after the spinnaker
Helm - steers

With your weight you'd be somewhere towards the back of the boat.

Usually back grinding I suspect and hanging onto the rail the rest of the time?

If you're interested then I know someone who's looking for a crew in about 4 weeks time for a few days of gentle dinghy sailing from Cowes.

try PYDWW a compant that delivers yachts world wide.
They don't pay but may pay expenses if you're lucky

Thanks for the offers, Snoggledog, a little far to travel for dinghy sailing, thanks anyway.

Will have a look at PYDWW thanks for that.

Ol' Dirty, sounds interesting, look forward to hearing about that. smile

I have some spare time now...gordon bennetrolleyes...all I want to do is spent 7hrs a day of work time on PH- not too much to ask surely?!

Righty, as I cannot seem to find the email button,
I dont know if we could offer what your after(boat deliveries etc...) but my father & myself are sailing on it most weekends (weather pemitting) & always need an extra pair of experienced hands
The boat is moored in the Tamar (Plymouth/Saltash) I dont know if this is too far for you to travel?
We go out around the sound, and just past Kingsand & Cawsands...our experience & set of balls dictates how far we go out- all in all were usually ut for about 6-7hrs at a time.
But your more than welcome to join us next time we go out and tbh it you would be doing us a favour as the old man is knocking on a bit & he is a bit slow!
Maybe we could learn from you?thumbup

Nic,

The best thing to do is go to www. rorc.org & sign up on their crew list - owners of boats competing in RORC series can then access your details
