Around 18.00 going West to East across the Ribble valley in Lancashire.
Obviously it was dark with a clear sky.
I looked up as yet another commercial big jet went over, then I noticed something behind and higher, 2 tiny things almost side by side, over the next couple of minutes there were 9 more, line astern.
In my head I've decided they were not private jets... So must be military.
I have never seen that many together before.

Not starlink satellites by any chance (Elon musks starlight broadband service), they tend to follow each other across the nights sky in batches.

It’ll be starlink satellites as above, there’s hundreds of the buggers up there.

I’d agree that is was probably a Starlink ‘train’. They get launched in batches and at first will be in a line before being sent to their own orbit to provide coverage.

Caught this one earlier this year - cool sight

Brilliant,thank you all.
But disappointed it isn't some clandestine military mission.

A mate of mine saw the same a few nights ago. He was blown away when I told him what it was, I suppose the chances of you looking up at exactly the right time are pretty tiny and there would have been a time where it would have just been ‘must be aliens’ hehe

Starlink have been launching for years now, I remember looking out for them as a lockdown evening pastime!

How many are there up there now? We must be rapidly heading towards Kessler Syndrome tipping point!

Unlikely as there are only 5 or so meteors an hour……definitely Starlink.

About 6500 I believe and the final aim is about 12000 but I thought they were in a lower orbit than most satellites and therefore unlikely to cause a Kessler event. I might be speaking ste though. :scratchin:

We have starlink and it’s awesome.

I was really lucky to see the train I posted - just happened to look up! Was amazed how fast they move. I took the photo on an iPhone 15 Pro with the night mode which is c. 3 second exposure and you can see the movement. Within a couple of minutes they were out of sight

Starlinks satellites are in a fairly low orbit so many of them have already re-entered and burned up. They need constant replenishment.

6000....with a target of 40000!

Starlink is the main reason they are doing 150 launches this year.

Is this Elon Musk's approach to total world domination..... How does a private individual get to put thousands of satellites all around the world for his own financial benefit.

I know what Starlink is about, and as a global solution run by governments it's a great solution to internet connectivity, but there's something James Bond world domination about this..... Tommorow Never Dies.... Put your infrastructure in and then destroy the opposition so you have the world under your control. The only car that will work is a Tesla...

It reminds me of a 2008 doctor who episode.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1159992/

Young Elon musk type character fits every car in the world with a device that ends up gassing the planet.

The Doctor gets a call from onetime traveling companion Martha Jones with a request that he return to Earth immediately. She and the military have taken over the ATMOS plant and she needs his help after 52 people around the world all died simultaneously. All had the ATMOS anti-pollution device fitted on their cars so the military has raided the factory believing it to be controlled by aliens. The Doctor learns that the Sontarans are planning to take over the Earth.

Governments don't have the vision. If it was left to them we would still be using rotary dial telephones, because they meet the basic requirements of a telephone.

Starlink isn't doing anything new. It's just somebody willing to sink a ton of cash into making it work. Bozos also has the same plans. Regardless they are not going for world domination, just the best way of getting Internet everywhere. It's a game changer for ships and aircraft, let alone remote parts of the earth.

It will soon be working direct to mobile (existing phones not a satellite phone). It will be extra to what you already have though, it won't replace it.
