I want to learn more about the RAF Nimrod in all its variants, what’s the go-to book on them?

There's a section on it here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Maritime-Patrol-Air...

Not the world's definite reference I suspect but it's a good book and puts the Nimrod in context for the genre.

Southend Airshow late 1990s, as they passed our balcony. Scanned from a pair of prints, so apologies for the Airtours 757 which also gave a good show.

What would you like to know.

I worked Nimrod R1 for 5 years as a missions systems TG1 avionics engineer. Maintaining all the mission kit in the back of it.

I will caveat that with the fact I’m bound by the official secrets act still so will not divulge anything secret of which most of it is.

1/2 a dozen of my friends are Nimrod MR2 ex wet / dry crew who spent there lives hunting subs, if there is something specific you would like to know. Again they are all bound by the official secrets act.

There is a good 32 page pamphlet put together by a couple of Master Aircrew called Nimrod R1 History, Mystery and gratitude. It’s very detailed (as detailed as would be allowed bearing in mind the subject and its secretive nature) if you can find a copy of it.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that pamphlet.

I recall seeing these fly over South Cornwall heading out to sea whilst on holidays in the late 70's early 80's so have fond memories linked to them. I now have more time to read about things that interest me [seeing as #1 son is at Uni and #1 daughter is studying her A Levels] so needed some ideas on books to make the evenings interesting smile.

I have books on the Vulcan, Valkyrie, U2, Sr71, B1, B52, B36 Peacemaker, Tu95 bear, Tupolev TU160, MIG 25 and Tu144 to keep me going i the dark nights of late Autumn / Winter smile

Is the Bruntingthorpe Nimrod still there, or has it been chopped up? I saw it back in 2017.

Still there I believe. About 9 mins in, it's not a nice sight.

Jesus, I wish you hadn’t provided that YouTube link. Nothing to do with aircraft, but those awful people filming it!

Quite, his channel is an excellent mix of tomfoolery and serious work restoring tanks (and other stuff) to a high standard. Very watchable.

Nimrod operational squadrons plus the OCU were based at RAF St.Mawgan near Newquay for over 20 years between 1969 and 1992, so the aircraft was heavily associated with Cornwall all through the 70's and 80's.
